Streetscape nearly complete
FEATURED STORY · September 24, 2009

One of the final items for the Streetscape Phase 2 project was completed Wednesday with the installation of the illuminated lights placed on top of the brick markers. There are four markers in total--paired on each side of South Fifth Avenue about 120 yards apart. The copper colored tops of the markers match the tops of the hybrid icons; both were fabricated by Iowa Metal Fabrication of Indianola. The sides of the markers have two clay tiles with four different images of historical aspects of Coon Rapids: one is a picture of Roswell Garst and Charlie Thomas; another shows a small pile of ears of corn; a third shows a railroad train; and the fourth shows a picturesque view of the Middle Raccoon River. Originally one of the tiles was going to be the image of Nikita Khrushchev holding an ear of corn (the picture was originally published in Life magazine) but several residents objected to the proposal, saying Khrushchev was an evil dicator undeserving of Coon Rapids’ memorial.
