Daniel Clipperton, of rural Bayard was surprised this fall when his son, Peyton, caught a bobcat.
Daniel said his son had told him numerous times he had seen a bobcat on the property behind their home four miles south of Bayard, but Daniel didn’t believe him.
“He loves hunting. He is always back in the tree stand behind our house with his little toy bow. That’s when he kept coming back and telling me that he saw this bobcat,” Daniel said. “Then this fall he was trying to trap some otters down there in our pond behind the house and he ended up catching a bobcat.”
When eight-year-old Peyton told his dad about the bobcat he caught, Daniel was skeptical.
“I didn’t believe him, of course, and I went down there and sure enough he had a bobcat,” Daniel said.
“I was surprised, it was funny,” Peyton said. “I thought when I caught it that my dad was going to have a hard time getting it out, because you can’t kill them.”
After taking some photos of the catch, Daniel called the DNR to report their catch. Then they released the wild animal, per Iowa law.
The bobcat isn’t the only animal Peyton has managed to catch in his small live traps. He has also caught his sister’s cat and the family beagle.
“He’s quite a trapper,” Daniel said of Peyton’s skills.
