The city council voted to hire Mitch Williamson as a full-time police officer of the Coon Rapids Police Department. Williamson, who was present at the meeting, was lauded by Police Chief Joel Roetman as an excellent candidate.
Mayor Keith Dorpinghaus agreed, stating, “Joel did a lot of work on this project and I feel very confident with his decision.”
Roetman collected a pool of 30 applicants and narrowed the list to 10, from which Roetman and council members Geri Thacker and Roger Clayburg and Mayor Dorpinghaus interviewed.
“I really do feel that of all the people we interviewed, we have the best candidate,” Thacker said.
The council approved a salary of $15 per hour for the new recruit, who hails from Lyle, MN. Williamson is 21 years of age and this is his first job as a police officer. He is a graduate with an associate degree in Law Enforcement from Riverland Community College in Austin, MN. He has also completed the Rochester Community Technical College Law Enforcement Program in Rochester, MN.
“I’m excited. It’s my first job and I’m ready to learn,” Williamson said.
Williamson is currently living in Carroll, but plans to move to Coon Rapids at his earliest convenience.
