New resident brings yoga to town
FEATURED STORY · April 28, 2010
FROM THE COON RAPIDS ENTERPRISE FRONT PAGE ARCHIVES

Brooke Ralston grew up in Cedar Rapids and never thought she’d be a small town girl. But she’s now living in Coon Rapids and loves it. She graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids in 2005 with a psych and public relations degree. After a stint in Los Angeles working at PR firm and volunteering at a halfway house, she joined the AmeriCorp volunteers. One of the nonprofit groups where she was stationed at was in Coon Rapids, at Whiterock Conservancy. While she was doing environmental work at Whiterock, she met a young man named Sean Christensen. They started dating. She spent two months in Coon Rapids before the AmeriCorps program moved her to Mississippi and then to Michigan. But the relationship with Christensen survived and at the end of her service with AmeriCorps, she moved back here. Brooke is now the Activities Director for St. Gregory’s Retreat Center in Adair but also has started teaching yoga in Coon Rapids. Last Thursday was the first session and it attracted 26 women and a man. The yoga class was held at Whiterock’s new Bur Oak Visitors’ Center. Students filled the open-air shelter of the center, sitting on colored kindergarten style mats and stretched, turned and manipulated arms and legs with pleasure. The city girl has brought yoga to small town Coon Rapids!
