Cinder tracks are old school while thinclads thin in numbers

The annual CRB track meet saw just three teams join their hosts on the oval last Thursday afternoon.
Renamed the Tom Tipton Invitational several years ago in recognition of the longtime CRB teacher and track coach, the event was once competitive with 8, 9 and even 10 teams. In recent years, however, the Tipton Invitational has lost its popularity among area schools who favor all-weather tracks over cinder tracks. When Guthrie Center completed their new all-weather track last year and opted out of the Tipton Invitational in order to schedule its own invitational on the same day, it might as well have been the final nail on the coffin.
The consensus among fans and volunteer workers at the meet feel that in its current sad state, the event should be disassociated with the honorable Tipton or discontinued altogether. Some said they wished it had been cancelled or rescheduled to another day this year.
The only redeeming aspect of the meet was the final girls team scoring which saw CAM of Anita edge Glidden-Ralston, 152 to 151. Coon Rapids-Bayard tied Paton-Churdan for third with 71 points apiece.
CRB track coach Dan Spooner, who is in his first year as track coach for both boys and girls, also found some value to the meet, saying that his athletes were able to compete against equal competition whereas they are not competitive at all weather tracks, for example this week’s conference meet held at Guthrie Center. Spooner has just 8 boys and 7 girls participating on his teams.
The CRB girls failed to get any firsts in the meet, but Breanna Lappe won second in the discus (70’6”) and third in the shot put (26’0”). Regina Doty won second in the long jump (12’3”) and 4th in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes (14.35 and 31.37). Emily Seidl took third in the high jump (4’4”) and fourth in the 400 meter dash (1:20.30). Brittany Carpenter took third in both the 1500 meter and 800 meter runs, and Nikki Pina finished fourth in the 800 meter run. Also the girls’ 4x800 meter relay team of Pina, Seidl, Carpenter and Hemphill took second in 14:01.25.
For the boys, CRB was led by Colton Geer who captured the shot put (43’ 7 1/2”) and the discus (111’ 4 1/2”), while Jacob Esdohr won the high jump (5’8”). Zach Davis placed third in the shot put (35’9‘) and fourth in the discus (82’2”), while Jay Carstens took second in the long jump (16’ 5 1/2”). Daniel Kult finished third in the long jump just an inch behind Carstens. Also Kult won the 400 meter dash (1:00.54), while Logan Kelly took third in the 1600 meter run (7:34.20) and the 800 meter run (3:19.99).
In relay events, CRB won the 1600 medley relay in 4:22.22. Members of the team included Kult, Esdohr, Carstens and Brendan McAlister.
Glidden-Ralston ran away with the title, scoring 214 points compared to 110 points for CRB and 53 points for Paton-Churdan.
