Who would take second graders on a five day vacation?
FEATURED STORY · June 09, 2010
FROM THE COON RAPIDS ENTERPRISE FRONT PAGE ARCHIVES
This spring was the 38th time that local second grade students at Coon Rapids-Bayard have taken the annual Missouri trip. Current second grade teacher Nancy Duncan has gone on the trip every year since 1980. Also chaperoning on the trip this year included veterans Deb and Jerry Kult, Mike Stout, Teresa Gelhaus and Trish Jackson.
Once again the trip was filled with lots of fun, educational activities, and lifelong learning lessons. Some of the high points of the trip are a visit to the Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph; a tour of a Civil War Hospital in Lexington called the Anderson House; swimming at a middle school pool in Sedalia; and a tour of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Mansfeld. In the Branson area, the children ride the ducks (see photo above), see the Shepherd of the Hills Pageant, have a fun-filled day at Silver Dollar City, tour the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery followed by a picnic and fishing in Table Rock Lake. In Springfield they go to the Springfield Zoo and take in a movie. The final events on the return trip are an educational stop at the Science City and Kaleidoscope in Kansas City.
The trip was created 38 years ago by Principal Robert Deal and second grade teachers Wanda Penfold and Paula Murrell. While they were studying about The Little House On the Prairie book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, they decided that it would be a wonderful experience for the children to be able to actually see an author’s home and the area where she wrote the books. So they organized a trip down south and discovered many fun activities along the way. Former first grade teacher Pat Lyons was also a longtime chaperone. The rest is history!
