John Jack Scott
March 06, 2010 · Mass of the Christian burial for John “Jack” Scott were held on Saturday, March 6 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. Reverend Anthony Pick officiated the service.
Burial was held at Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids.
Lector for the mass was Kathy Ewoldt. Gift bearers were Matthew and Moira Wiedenman. Eucharistic Minister was Stephen Kult. Leah Dentlinger and Nicole Dentlinger served as mass servers.
Casket bearers were Matthew Wiedenman, Austin Wiedenman, John Wiedenman, Martin Wiedenman, Robert Curl, Dale Curl, and John C. Scott.
John David Scott
John David, son of Carl Edward and Mary Margaret (Anderson) Scott, was born April 11, 1934, at Coon Rapids, Iowa. He attended Coon Rapids community schools, graduating high school in 1952. He worked at Peterson Clothing in Coon Rapids before enlisting in the Army in 1955. John served in a clerical capacity in Germany and upon his discharge returned to Coon Rapids. He ran the Standard Oil tank wagon from 1959 to 1966.
John was united in marriage with Irene Anthofer on September 16, 1961, at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids. Five children were born to this union. John worked in distribution and logistics at Garst Seed Co. from 1966 until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of Annunciation Church and the local Jaycees, as well as serving as a Boy Scout leader. John taught religious education classes and volunteered at church whenever there was a need. He loved his family and grandchildren and having coffee with his friends. John enjoyed fishing with his children, flower gardening and antiquing in his spare time.
On Tuesday, March 2, 2010, John died suddenly and unexpectedly at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids, Iowa. He was 75 years, 10 months and 19 days of age.
John is preceded in death by his parents, brother Jay D. Scott and nephew Roger Curl.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Irene Scott of Coon Rapids; five children: Catherine (Martin) Wiedenman of Omaha, NE; Michael (Lynn) Scott of Broken Arrow, OK; Curtis (Susie) Scott of Carroll; Carol Scott of Omaha, NE; and Sarah (Mark) Scheffer of Sioux City; eight grandchildren: Matthew (Moira) Wiedenman; Austin Wiedenman; John Wiedenman; Kobe Scott; Ethan Scott; Megan Scott; Nelle Scheffer and Miles Scheffer; sister Nadine (Dean) Curl of Des Moines; brother Jerry (Florence) Scott of Kissimmee, FL; special family member Kay (Bill) Kult of Climax Springs, MO; other relatives and friends.

Services for Earl Lee Phelps of Coon Rapids were held today, March 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Reverend Lynn Gunderson officiating.
Honorary casketbearers were Jack Schauf, James Schauf, Bob Schauf, Craig Sumner, Michael Peatrowsky, Edward Kinnick, Norman Crees, Eugene Phelps, Ralph Phelps, Raymond Cadwallader, Steve Eischeid, Charles Headlee, and Robert Nymand Jr.
Interment at Highland Township Cemetery will be held at a later date.
EARL LEE PHELPS
Earl Lee Phelps, age 75, of rural Coon Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, March 4, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. Officiating will be the Reverend Lynn Gunderson. Organist will be Lulu Garnes. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack Schauf, James Schauf, Bob Schauf, Craig Sumner, Michael Peatrowsky, Edward Kinnick, Norman Crees, Eugene Phelps, Ralph Phelps, Raymond Cadwallader, Steve Eischeid, Charles Headlee, and Robert Nymand Jr. Burial will be at the Highland Township Cemetery near Bayard at a later date. Visitation will begin at 9 A.M. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church until the time of the funeral service. The Sharp Funeral Home of Carroll is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Mr. Phelps was born on August 26, 1934, at Carroll, Iowa, the son of Henry Earl and Agnes Christine (Schnoor) Phelps. He spent his entire lifetime on the family farm home four miles southwest of Bayard and graduated from Bayard High School in 1953. On August 24, 1958, he was married to JoAnn Schauf at the Bayard United Methodist Church. Mr. Phelps was an accomplished blacksmith. He had the opportunity to work at welding, metal fabrication, his radiator repair business, bridge work, gas line welding, farming, truck driving, mechanic, and was the welder for Amoco and Grace Drilling Company at the oil well located near Halbur and the suspended bridge at River Side Park. He enjoyed his motorcycles, building his portable welding truck and his wife’s Chopper, working on their 1970 Shelby Cobra GT 500, fishing, canoeing, teaching his grandson Jacob the blacksmith trade, and was fascinated by the Lewis and Clark Expedition and sunken ships like the Bertrand at DeSoto Bend. Earl Lee was an EMT-B with the Bayard Ambulance for many years, and was a Highland Township Trustee. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Coon Rapids, Local 106 Carpenter Union, and the Iowa, Nebraska, and National Blacksmith and Welders Associations. Earl Lee loved his family and enjoyed telling everyone interested in the history of Coon Rapids and the White Rock area.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Phelps of Coon Rapids; a son, Orrin Don Phelps and special friend Pam Holcomb of Coon Rapids; a daughter, Jody Ann Evans and husband David of Altoona; a grandson, Jacob Evans of Altoona; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Charlotte Ault of Bayard, Jack and Mae Schauf of Ocala, Florida, James and Shannon Schauf of Overland Park, Kansas, and Bob and Rosanne Schauf of Rio Grande, New Mexico; and cousins, Laura Boots Chambers of Bayard, Don Brideson and wife Claudia of Jacksonville, Florida, Ronald Brideson of Dallas Center, Robert Nymand and wife Pat of Brayton, Garfield Sumner and wife M.J. of Chipita Park, Colo., Janet Rosenbladt of Owatonna, Minn., and Zoe Siedenkranz and husband Mike of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Dean Phelps, in infancy; and a special family member, Beth Knudson Booth.

Jake Smouse
March 03, 2010 · Funeral services for Jake Smouse of Coon Rapids were held on Wednesday, March 3 at the First United Church in Coon Rapids with Reverend Lynn Gunderson as celebrant. Lula Garnes served as organist. Military honors were given by members of the American Legion.
Members of the American Legion served as casket bearers. Interment with military honors by American Legion Gurney Parker Post 357 was held at Orange Township Cemetery south of Coon Rapids.
Jake Smouse
Jake Thomas, son of Don and Emma (Rhubee) Smouse, was born March 9, 1914, on a farm northwest of Coon Rapids, Iowa. He attended country school near his home after which he farmed with his family and neighbors. In 1936 Jake began working as a mechanic with Frank Cabelka.
From September of 1942 through January of 1946, Jake was a member of the United States Army. During World War II, he served in England and Normandy, and France in the ambulance corps of the 249th General Hospital Mobile Unit. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, Jake returned to Coon Rapids.
On February 7, 1946, Jake was united in marriage with Ethel B. Nelson at the Gospel Tabernacle in Omaha, Nebraska. One daughter was born to this union. In 1947, Jake and Ethel went into the watch-making and jewelry repair business. They operated Smouse Jewelry in Coon Rapids until their retirement in 1983.
Jake was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion and Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed making and showing small gas and model steam engines and repairing clocks.
Jake died Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home, Coon Rapids, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 11 months, and 18 days.
Besides his parents, Jake was preceded in death by his wife Ethel Smouse in 2008; grandson Jacob “Jake” Hughes; three brothers: Dale Smouse and wife Ada; Donald Smouse and wife Ruth; and Frank Smouse; twin sister Jessie and husband Walter Schumacher; brother-in-law Harvey Olson; and nephew Larry Smouse.
He is survived by his daughter Donna and husband Charlie Hughes of Story City; granddaughter-in-law Jennifer Hughes and great-granddaughter Kelsey Hughes of Gilbert, AZ; brothers Harold Smouse and wife Maxine of Coon Rapids and Charlie Smouse and wife Marlene of Scranton; sister Thelma Olson of Duluth, MN; sister-in-law Maxine Sparks of Armstrong; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Arrangements entrusted to Ohde Funeral Home.

Linda Hoffman
March 02, 2010 · Mass of the Christian burial for Linda Mae Hoffman, 86 of Carroll was held on Tuesday, March 2, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. Linda died on Friday, February 26 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Reverends Timothy A. Johnson and Andrew W. Hoffman officiated the service.
Lectors for the service were Jessica Hoffmann, Nicole Shirbroun, and Karla Rice. Eucharistic Ministers were Earl Possehn and Marlene Hoffmann. Gift bearers were Linda’s grand daughters.
Casket bearers were Rodney Segebart, Ernest Segebart III, Justn Hoffmann, Kurt Possehn, Nathan Shirbroun, Joseph Hoffmann, and Jonathan Halterman. Honorary casket bearers included Linda’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Burial was held at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Linda Mae Hoffmann
Linda Mae, daughter of Sylvester J. and Mathilda E. (Neuerburg) Thelen was born on January 5, 1924 on a farm north of Carroll, Iowa. She attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and later stayed home to help on her family farm.
On May 1, 1945 Linda was united in marriage with John F. Hoffmann at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Linda was a homemaker and the family made their home in Carroll and Crawford Counties. In 1975 Linda began working for G.E. in Carroll. She retired in 1989. Linda was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and the G.E.T.S. Club. In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with family, crocheting, sewing, knitting, cooking, baking, playing dice, card games and going camping.
After the death of her husband in 1998, Linda remained home in Carroll until 2009. Then, after a short stay in the nursing home, she returned home to live with her daughter, Geri. In January 2010 she was hospitalized and later became a resident of the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home. On February 26, 2010 she was transferred to St. Anthony Regional Hospital where she died at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 21 days.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four children: Cletus Hoffmann, Delbert Hoffmann, LaVeda Segebart and John Lynn Hoffmann; grandson Joshua Hoffmann; brother Gerald Thelen; sisters-in-law Marleen Thelen and Donna Thelen and brother-in-law Alfred Hoffman.
She is survived by her eight children: Melvin Hoffmann of Dundalk, MD; LaVern Hoffmann of Carroll; Rosemary and husband Earl Possehn of Ft. Dodge; Loras Hoffmann and wife Marlene of Arcadia; Daryl Hoffmann of Carroll; Lawrence Hoffmann and wife Char of Glidden; Geralyn Shirbroun and fiance Darwin Halterman of Bayard; Brenda and husband Jackie Cain of Elkton, KY; son-in-law Ernest Segebart Jr. of Denison; daughter-in-law Donna Hoffmann of Coon Rapids; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; 1 step-great-great granddaughter; siblings: Marcile Hoffman of Carroll; Norman Thelen of Carroll; Eugene Thelen and wife Kay of Ankeny; Sylvester Thelen and wife Kay of Templeton; Ralph Thelen of Davenport; Norbert Thelen and wife Virginia of Anita; Lawrence Thelen and wife Cecelia of Vail; Mary Ann and husband Allan Ludwig of Carroll and Lynette and husband Michael Schaffer of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law Florence Thelen of Atlantic; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Linda was very special and will be missed by many.

Don Pedersen
January 31, 2010 · Funeral services for Donald E. Pedersen, of Coon Rapids, were held on Wednesday, February 3 at Ohde Funeral Home in Coon Rapids with Pastor John Kult officiating. Military Honors by American Legion, Gurney Parker Post 357. Interment at Orange Township in Coon Rapids will be held at a later date.

Donald E. Pedersen
Donald Eugene, son of Wilford and Erma Annet (Turner) Pedersen was born January 19, 1929 at Elk Horn, Iowa. He attended high school in Harlan, graduating with the Class of 1946.
On September 18, 1950, Don was united in marriage with Naomi Ruth Larson at Harlan. The next year, on April 6, 1951, Don enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He reached the rank of Corporal before his discharge in March 1953. Don and Naomi were the parents of two children and made their home in Coon Rapids. Don worked for Garst Company in Coon Rapids for six years. In 1964 he opened Don’s DX in Coon Rapids where many of the children would gather after school and on weekends. He later owned T & D Standard, also in Coon Rapids. Don worked along with his wife for over 40 years until his retirement in 2007. However, in his retirement he felt most at home at the station and with the help of his family was able to spend much time there.
Don was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Lions Club and the American Legion. He was a happy, positive person and in his spare time enjoyed working and spending time with his family.
Don died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home on Sunday morning, Janauary 31, 2010 at the age of 81 years and 12 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and father-in-law Lawrence Larson.
Don is survived by his wife Naomi Pedersen of Coon Rapids; daughter Terri and husband Doug Bock of Carroll; son Tim Pedersen and wife Mary Jo of Coon Rapids; seven grandchildren: Jason Bock and wife Kristi; Matthew Bock, Tyler Bock, Dawn and husband Wes Jones, Bobbie Jo Pedersen, Logan Pedersen and Collin Pedersen; four great-grandchildren Jonathan and Janae Jones, Alexis Ouderkirk and Avery Bock; brother Butch Pedersen and wife Irma of Harlan; sisters Judy Ahrenholz of Harlan and Ruth Kres of Omaha, NE; mother-in-law Gladys Larson of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law Irene and husband Conrad Hoisington of Coon Rapids; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. January 28, 2010 · A prayer service followed by a Rosary for Mary E. Schwenk will be held on Thursday, February 4 at Johnson and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids. Funeral services will be on Friday, February 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids with Father Anthony Pick as Celebrant and Louis Meiners as deacon. John Kult will serve as Lector. Mass servers will be Ben Hylan and Nick Hyland.
Music will be provided by the Annunciation choir, Diane Slater as organist, Carly Myers as vocalist and guitarist and Brianna Schwenk as vocalist.
Gift bearers will be Nicki Myers, Carly Myers, Brianna Schwenk and Michael Schwenk. Mary E. Schwenk
Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Monahan) Hyland, was born February 28, 1925, near Lohrville in Calhoun County, Iowa. Growing up, she attended country school near Churdan and graduated from Churdan High School. Following her selfless nature, Mary then pursued her dream of becoming a nurse and enrolled at St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in Carroll, Iowa. Upon completion, she worked as a Registered Nurse at Greene County Memorial Hospital in Jefferson and at Veterans’ Hospital in Des Moines.
On July 17, 1948, Mary was united in marriage with the love of her life, Leo Schwenk of Council Bluffs. The family made their home in Des Moines and Paton before making Coon Rapids their permanent home in 1955. The couple shared their love with two children – Larry Leo born in 1952 and Kae Ann born in 1957. Mary continued her work as a nurse in Coon Rapids at the Hope Truax Nursing Home and Thomas Rest Haven. She finished her nursing career with 27 years of service as a school nurse at Coon Rapids Schools. During this time she also served as basketball chaperone for 14 years.
On Thursday, January 28, 2010, following a memorable holiday visit with Kae and her children, Mary passed away at Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida. She was 84 years of age.
Mary was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church and was active in the Ladies Guild and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Throughout the years, she was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Iowa Nurses’ Association, So and Sew group for 40 years and the Federated Club. Mary also served as an American Red Cross nurse for first aid and CPR courses. She enjoyed needlework and traveling with family and friends to destinations such as the Caribbean, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and Europe.
As the most important aspect of her life, Mary had an extensive network of loving family and friends. Her passion was her large and loving Irish family of which she played the role of matriarch for most of her life.
Mary is survived by two children: Larry Schwenk and wife Margie of Coon Rapids and Kae Myers of Gainesville, Florida; five grandchildren: Brianna and Michael Schwenk and Andrew, Carly and Nicki Myers; two brothers: Phillip Hyland and wife Donna of St. George, Utah and John William Hyland and wife Diane of Coon Rapids; two sisters: Helen (Bonnie) Adams of Rockwell City and JoAnne Fritz of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law: Frieda Hyland of Omaha, Nebraska and Rita Hyland of Churdan; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two baby sons - Timothy and Charles; two brothers: Virgil Hyland and Richard Hyland; a sister Josephine Hyland; and two brothers-in-law Tom Adams and Dick Fritz.
Mary had one of the most nurturing and gentle of souls. As a caregiver to all, she will be thoroughly missed.

Madalene Kemp
January 13, 2010 · Madalene Kemp, 83, died January 5 at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House in Des Moines. She was born in Coon Rapids on March 22, 1926 to Ethel Mae (Pierce) and Francis Lott Smouse and moved to Des Moines in 1946.
Madalene is survived by her children, Linda, Neal (MaryAnn), Brian and Karl; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Richard, died in 2006.
A private family memorial will be held.

Gene Hilgenberg
December 29, 2009 · Funeral services for Gene “Rock” Hilgenberg, a life long resident of the Coon Rapids and Bayard area, were held on Saturday morning, January 2 at the United Methodist Church in Bayard. Officiating the service was Charlene Wolfe. Judy Hilgenberg sang Amazing Grace with Martha Wolf as organist. Interment was at Highland Township Cemetery near Bayard.
Casket bearers were Tim Hilgenberg, Larry Hilgenberg, Ric Hilgenberg, Keith Hilgenberg, Brad Kerns, Dave Prescott, and Dan Imler.
Gene “Rock” Hilgenberg
Thyrl Gene “Rock”, son of Louis and Lucy Bean Hilgenberg, was born September 26, 1924, near Coon Rapids, in Carroll County, Iowa. Gene was baptized into the Lutheran faith. He attended country school near Springbrook and the Bayard Community School. Following his schooling, Gene drove truck for several years.
On April 28, 1949, Gene was united in marriage with Genevieve Herron. He worked for Garst and Thomas Seed Corn Company in Coon Rapids, Iowa for 14 years. In 1963, he began working as a maintenance supervisor for Oscar Mayer in Perry, Iowa. Gene and Genevieve lived in Coon Rapids for 6 years before moving to Bayard where they purchased his parents’ home. After Gene’s retirement in 1987, they continued to live in Bayard. His wife died in 2002. Gene had numerous interests including golf, fishing, mushroom hunting, playing cribbage and watching car races. He was a long time active member of the Masonic Order, Coon Rapids chapter. He especially enjoyed giving his grandchildren rides on his motorcycle.
In 2005 when he was no longer able to live alone, Gene became a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids. He died there on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 3 days.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife Genevieve, his parents, a sister Thelma as a young girl, and three brothers: Lyle, Glenn and Merle.
He is survived by his seven children: Tim (Judy) of Guthrie Center, Larry “Hap” (Ginger) of Coon Rapids, Ric (Gae Deane) of Avoca, Keith (Carla) of Camanche, Gaye (Dan) Imler of Bayard, Brenda (Dave) Prescott of Glidden, and Penny (Brad) Kerns of Ames. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren: Megan Sheeder, Tonya Schlepp, Travis, Trevor and Tyler Hilgenberg, Tiffany Fatka, J.C. and Kaylee Hilgenberg, Jordan and Zach Imler, Genna and Brendan Prescott, and Luke and Haley Kerns, as well as 15 great-grandchildren, sister Evelyn Wolf of Yale, sisters-in-law Loie Hilgenberg of Waukee, Naomi Kepple and Mildred Herron of Bayard, brother-in-law Gene Crouch of Bayard, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Howard Nielson
December 23, 2009 · Services for Howard Nielsen were held here Monday at the United Methodist Church.
Reverend Lynn Gunderson officiated the service, with Cindy Seastrom as vocalist and Lula Garnes as organist. Casket bearers were Kelly Nielsen, Kyler Nielsen, Kody Nielsen, Maurice Nielsen, Bob Nielsen, and Larry Huffman. Howard Rex, son of Rasmus L. and Louise M. (Sorensen) Nielsen, was born April 21, 1922 at Coon Rapids. He attended rural school near his home and then went to school in Bayard, graduating with the Class of 1941. After completing his education, Howard worked on the farm with his dad until enlisting in the United States Army in 1942.
On April 5, 1948, Howard was united in marriage with Dorothy “Dotty” White at the Fitzsimmons Hospital Chapel in Aurora, Colorado, where his wife was stationed. Howard had reenlisted in the Army and the couple lived in numerous countries while Howard served in the Army of Occupation in Japan and Korea. He was also stationed in Germany. After returning to the states, Howard was stationed in El Paso, TX. Then in February of 1963 after 20 years and one month he retired from the Army. The couple moved to Bellevue, NE. In mid 1963, Howard joined the federal civil service at Ft. McCoy, WI. After a short time there he was transferred to Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue in administrative duties. He retired from the civil service in 1984 and they remained in Bellevue until moving to Carroll in November of 2004.
After traveling much of their lives with the U. S. Army, Howard and Dotty enjoyed their home and caring for their poodles, as well as visiting family and the farm of his youth near Bayard. Howard loved to dance throughout his life. He also enjoyed fishing and feeding squirrels near his home.
Dotty died in 2005 and Howard continued to live in Carroll until his health began to fail and he became a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. Shortly before his death, Howard had been admitted to the St Anthony Hospital in Carroll where he died on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 2 days. Preceding Howard in death are his parents; wife and two brothers Paul Nielsen and Karl Nielsen and wife Mary Jo.
He is survived by his brother Darrell Nielsen and wife Marjorie of Glidden; four sisters: Winona and husband Ralph Huffman of Audubon; Annie and husband Jerry Vincent of Jefferson; Marie Nielsen of Audubon and Judy and husband Dave Marques of Livermore, CO; sister-in-law Helen Nielsen of Coon Rapids; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lyle Sauvago
December 22, 2009 · A private family mass was held for Lyle Melvin Sauvago, 94, of Denison, and a former Coon Rapids resident, who died on Tuesday, December 22. No other services will be held.
Lyle Melvin Sauvago
Lyle Melvin, son of Merle and Leotha (Mowrey) Sauvago, was born May 25, 1915, at Sac City, Iowa. He grew up in Coon Rapids and graduated from Coon Rapids High School.
Lyle was united in marriage with Gertrude Barber on April 14, 1937, in Coon Rapids. One son Phillip was born to this union. They lived and worked in Coon Rapids where they built and operated the Coon Rapids Motel. Lyle worked for a time for Armour Creameries. He then worked for 32 years for the Garst & Thomas Hybrid Corn Co as an operations supervisor. Lyle was a faithful member of Annunciation Parish. He enjoyed daily walks with his wife and tending his yard and garden.
In 1967, Gertrude and Lyle retired and three years later moved to Carroll. Lyle drove a bus and tended the grounds for ten years for the Carroll Community School. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish. Gertrude died in 2005 and in December of that year he moved to the Swan House in Carroll.
When his health began to fail last spring, he became a resident of the Denison Healthcare Center in Denison, IA, where he died on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. He was 94 years, 11 months and 27 days of age.
Preceding him in death are his parents; two brothers Gerald Sauvago and Willard Sauvago and wife Dorothy; and brother-in-law Milo Kline.
He is survived by his son Phillip Sauvago and wife Linda of Denison; three grandchildren: Stacey Sauvago of Carroll, Sean Sauvago of Carroll and Kristin Sauvago of Des Moines; three great-grandchildren Amber, Jessica and Noah; one great great grandson; sister June Kline of Phoenix, AZ; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary Jo Park
December 17, 2009 · Mass of the Christian Burial will be held for Mary Jo Haterman this Friday, December 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton. Halterman died Monday after a long battle with Muscular Dystrophy.

Mary Jo Halterman
Mary Jo Halterman, 54, of Bayard passed away on Monday, December 14 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll after a long battle with Muscular Dystrophy.
Mary Jo was born on February 5, 1955 in Carroll, to Robert an Carol (West) Park. She grew up in Scranton and graduated from Scranton High School in 1973. After high school she attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. On February 19, 1975 she was united in marriage to Darwin Halterman at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton. The couple lived in Bayard where she did in home day care for many years. The couple divorced in 2001. Mary Jo was later employed by Precision Marketing in Coon Rapids. Mary Jo had been a resident of Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids for the past two years. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, bowling, dancing, reading, watching sports on t.v. and spending time with her grandchildren.
Surviving are her son Nicholas Halterman and his wife Tonya of Bayard; her mother Carol Park of Scranton; seven grandchildren: Trask Anderson, Chase Dickman, Dylan Dickman, Nikki Jo Halterman, Hanna Halterman, Rylee Halterman, and Kaden Halterman all of Bayard; two brothers, Andy Park and Jon Park of Barnum, and four sisters Terri Renwanz and her husband Bill of Jefferson, Kathy Geuss and her husband Eric of Grosse Pointe Park, MI, Trish Monthei of Yale, Jan Kirschman and her husband Rick of Ankeny, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her father, her grandparents, two brothers Steven and Mike Park, and a sister Julie Park.

Leon Eischeid
December 10, 2009 · Services for Leon “Lynn” Eischeid, 59, were Thursday, December 10 at St. Patrick’s Church in Bayard.
Eischeid died Monday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, surrounded by his family. He had been hospitalized and had undergone surgery on November 11 following complications from an aortic aneurism.
A visitation was held yesterday followed a Virgil/Rosary at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Interment will be at Highland Township Cemetery southwest of Bayard in Guthrie County.
LEON “LYNN” EISCHEID
Leon was born on January 8, 1950 to Gerry John and Leona Marie Reising-Eischeid in Carroll, Iowa. Born the 8th child, the first born son, of 15 siblings, he was his parent’s pride and joy. After graduating from Guthrie Center High School, Lynn met and married Cheryl Diane Hebing on February 22, 1969. Leon and Cheryl have owned and operated Eischeid Construction Company in Bayard since 1974. He was a member of Iowa Farm Bureau, Land Improvement Contractors of America, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, also serving on the Church Parish Council.
It goes without saying that Leon was clearly an Iowa State fan. However, his love for his family and faith was ever present each day. Leon was a caring husband to his wife of 40 years, Cheryl; a proud Papa of five children and 15 grandchildren, Troy Eischeid (1969-1996), his children with Melissa (Ken) Laughery, Jacob and Hayley Eischeid, and their children, Casandra, Genavieve, and KaeDee Laughery, of Waukee; Travis (Brenda) Eischeid and their children, Brady, Cody, Trey, and Riley, of Bayard; Thaine (Rachel) Eischeid and their children, Megan and Carter, of Grimes; Tara (Tim) Janssen and their children, Tiara, Tianna, Tinessa and Tiela of Bayard; Tandem Eischeid of Des Moines; Leon is also survived by 12 siblings, over 50 nieces and nephews; over 100 great-nieces and great-nephews, many cousins and friends.
Preceding Leon in death are his son, Troy; parents, Gerry and Leona Eischeid; parents-in-law, Leon & Verda Hebing; sisters, Sandra Eischeid and Gail Smith; brothers-in-law, Larry Smith and Marvin Hebing; and nine nieces and nephews.

Randy Schulze
December 10, 2009 · Funeral services for Randy Schulze, age 55, of Coon Rapids, were held on Tuesday, December 8 at Pleasant Ridge Community Church in Glidden. Pastor Brian Hodge officiated and the congregation sang with John Van Horn as accompanist. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery northwest of Coon Rapids.
Casket bearers were Dale Young, Tom Hoffman, Terry Hoffman, Roger Hartwigson, Gary Mendenhall, Al Tigges, Terry Janssen, Dan Richardson, Don Meiners and Keith Reinhart.
Randy Schulze
Randy Ray, son of Henry “Bud” and Ramona (McGee) Schulze, was born March 3, 1954 at Carroll, Iowa. He grew up with his family on a farm north of Coon Rapids. Randy attended Coon Rapids schools and graduated with the Class of 1972. He attended Pleasant Ridge Community Church with his parents.
Randy was an over-the-road truck driver and in 2002 purchased his own truck. He started his own business, eventually moving to Scranton. Randy was the father of three children, Christopher, Michael and Jessica.
In June of 2007, Randy was united in marriage with Colleen Young Musfeldt at Jefferson. After their marriage, they moved to the Schulze home place north of Coon Rapids. He was a member of the Harley Davidson Association and took great pride in his own Harley. In addition, Randy enjoyed driving his truck, fishing and playing cards. He was also a great NASCAR fan. Overall, he took great pleasure in being with his friends and step family.
Randy died unexpectedly as the result of a fire in his home north of Coon Rapids on Wednesday, December 2 at the age of 55 years, 8 months and 29 days.
Preceding Randy in death are his parents and son Christopher.
He is survived by his wife Colleen Schulze of Coon Rapids; two children Michael Schulze and wife Lindsey and Jessica Schulze and Ben Platt both of Glidden; step children: Sarah and husband Ron Wiese of Des Moines and their children Parker and Zoey; Jesse Musfeldt of Manning and Alison Musfeldt of Carroll; brother Larry Schulze of Coon Rapids; nephews Travis Schulze and wife Heather and their son Noah and Ryan Schulze both of Bossier, LA; step brothers and sisters: Wayne Young and wife Shirley of Ft. Deb Patton
December 03, 2009 · Funeral services were held last Saturday at Berean Baptist Church in Wiggins, MS for Debra Sue Patton, 45, of Lake City. Patton passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 25 in Saucier, MS while on vacation visiting family near Gulfport.
A Memorial Service for Patton, who was a former resident of Coon Rapids for 13 years, will be held this Saturday, December 5 at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Community Center in Coon Rapids.
Deb Patton was born September 22, 1964 in Burlington, the daughter of Charles Remele and Beverly Troth. The family moved to the Gulfport, MS area where Debra spent most of her youth. On November 14, 1982, she married Russell Patton Sr. Together they had three sons. Deb was a homemaker and loved her family. After her boys were raised, she directed more of her love to her animals. She was a member of Berean Baptist Church in Wiggins, MS.
Deb is survived by her husband, Russell Sr. of Lake City; her parents, Charles Remele of Coon Rapids and mother, Beverly Troth of Biloxi, MS; three sons: Russell, Jr., of Coon Rapids; Nicholas, of Scranton; and Michael Patton of Forest City; also a sister, Janet Hofbauer of Coon Rapids; brother, Marty Byers of Biloxi, MS, and one granddaughter, Briley Dornath of Wall Lake. Deb also leaves behind another grandchild, a son, expected to be born to Russell and his fiancé, Lindsay Kautzky of Coon Rapids within the next week or so.
Interment will be at Finley Cemetery near Gulfport, MS.

December 03, 2009 · Funeral services for Norma Jean Coffman of Waverly were held Monday morning, November 30 at the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids with Pastor Ben Ramirez officiating. NORMA COFFMAN
Norma Jean Coffman, 85, of Waverly died Thursday evening, November 26, 2009, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center of natural causes.
Jean was born on August 20, 1924, in Fansler, Iowa, near Guthrie Center, the daughter of Charles and Effie (Dove) Goochey. Jean attended country school west of North Branch, Iowa, grade school at Pine River Minnesota, and graduated from the Guthrie Center High School in 1942. On June 1, 1942, she was united in marriage to Louis McCurdy. The couple made their home in Coon Rapids, where Jean worked at Armors Creamery, Headlee Produce, Coon Rapids Dry Cleaners, Library and Main Street Market. Louis died in 1980, and Norma Jean continued to make her home in Coon Rapids. On April 9, 1983, she was united in marriage to Omar Coffman. The couple made their home in Carroll, Iowa, where Jean worked for the Carroll Dry Cleaners, retiring in 1989. Omar died on January 4, 2003, and following his death, Jean moved to Waverly and made her home at the Waverly Manor until September 22, 2009, she became a resident of the Shell Rock Healthcare Center.
Jean was a member of the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids, where she was baptized in 1957. While living in Carroll, Iowa, she was a member of the United Methodist Church. While living in Coon Rapids, Jean was an EMT for 7 years, something she was very proud of. Jean enjoyed sewing, quilting, painting and knitting (making hundreds of mittens over the years which she loved to give to family, friends and even sent overseas). But most of all Jean loved spending time with her grandchildren (who called her grandma-great).
She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Linda (Paul) Pines of Waverly; Sarann (Charles) Chase of Minier, Illinois, Janet (Carl) Froehlich of Wichita, Kansas, and Rick (Delena) McCurdy of Springdale, Arkansas; two step-children, Phillip (Betty) Coffman of Tucson, Arizona, Sue (Ron) Mozena of Bagley, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Gardner of Des Moines, Iowa, Mary (Nick) Andersen of Coon Rapids, Iowa; and one brother, Bob (Mary) Goochey of Park Rapids, Minnesota. Norma Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, one son Charles McCurdy in 1954, three sisters, Wilma Burns, Lucille Headlee, Eva Struthers, two brothers, Frank and Earl Goochey, and a great granddaughter, Molly Bonthuis.

Pete Oliver
December 03, 2009 · Funeral services for Orrin John “Pete” Oliver, 93, will be this Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 3 after 3 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Coon Rapids with a 7 p.m. Masonic Service.
Oliver, a life long resident of Coon Rapids, died on Sunday, November 29 at Thomas Rest Haven where he had been a resident.
Reverend Lynn Gunderson will officiate the service. Sam and Corrine Cretsinger will be vocalists accompanied by Lula Garnes. Casket bearers will be Brad Oliver, Jason Oliver, Matthew Oliver, Mark Thomas, Charlie Nixon, Tom Annear, and Wiltsie Cretsinger.
Interment with Military Honors by American Legion Gurney Parker Post #357 will be at Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids.
O.J. “Pete” Oliver
Orrin John “Pete” Oliver was born on May 8, 1916 to William and Anice Maude (Coffmann) Oliver in Guthrie County near Coon Rapids. Pete attended grade school in rural Coon Rapids and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1934. After graduation, Pete worked as a clerk for the Murdy Drug Store in Coon Rapids. From 1935 to 1937, he worked as a cashier at the Armour Creamery. In 1937, Pete began his career as an accountant for the Garst & Thomas Company in Coon Rapids. In 1941, Pete enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Aleutian Islands and Italy as a staff sergeant during World War II.
During military leave, Pete and LaVonne Dryden, of Audubon, were united in marriage on May 14, 1944. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, Pete and LaVonne made their home together in Coon Rapids. Pete continued to work for Garst & Thomas and during the 1950s, he and LaVonne began their family, adopting two children, Mark and Sue. In 1978, Pete retired from Garst & Thomas but continued to remain active in a number of capacities. In 1979, Pete began overseeing ponds and recreation facilities for Garst Company by maintaining fish populations, wood duck and kestrel houses and bluebird trails. Pete was a member of Coon Rapids Methodist Church for 87 years, serving on various committees and as an auditor for over 30 years. Since 1938, Pete was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was Worshipful Master in 1949 and 1977. He was also a member of the Copestone Chapter, Cryptic Council and Azgad Commandery of the Yorkrite Masons of Iowa, the Des Moines Consistory, Scottish Rite and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines. He served as president and vice president of the Carroll-Greene Shrine Club and for over 45 years, he organized an annual trip to the Shrine Circus in Des Moines for local sixth graders. Pete was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1941 and was named Worthy Patron 20 times. For 63 years, he was a member of the Gurney Parker Post of the American Legion. Pete also enjoyed serving as an adult leader for Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouts and as a Rainbow Dad for Rainbow for Girls. Pete lived his life as a selfless individual and was willing to lend a helping hand to his family, friends and community. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter and wildlife farmer. He also enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Pete passed away at Thomas Rest Haven on November 29, 2009 at age 93.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anice Maude Oliver and his brother and sister-in-law Raymond and Hazel Oliver; sister-in-law Ollyvene and her husband, Dale Hoegh, sister-in-law Esther and her husband, Kenny Farrell. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, LaVonne; son Mark (Pat) Oliver and daughter, Sue Oliver, all of Coon Rapids; grandsons Bradley and Jason (Marni) Oliver of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Matthew, of Ames, Iowa; one great-grandson Aaron Oliver, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and two nieces Lori (Bill) Kness, of Urbandale, and Jacque (Ron) Tate, of Runnells, Iowa.

Edna Hague
November 26, 2009 · Funeral services for Edna Hague, 97, will be this Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids.
Hague, a life long resident of this area, died last Friday at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Reverend Lynn Gunderson will officiate the service and Nancy Owen and DeEtte Grabill will be vocalists. Casket bearers will be Bradley Hague, Steven Swedberg, Scott Swedberg, John Tigges, Brian Tigges and Nathan Tigges. Honorary casket bearers will be Lyle Paulsen, Wendell Taggart, Mike Smith and Sam Cretsinger.
Interment will be in Orange Township Cemetery south of Coon Rapids.
EDNA HAGUE
Edna Naomi, daughter of Giles and Katie (Hartman) Taggert, was born March 12, 1912 at Audubon. She was raised on a farm between Audubon and Coon Rapids, one of eight children. Edna attended rural school near her home and then at age 15 worked as a hired girl in the Cretsinger home when Sam was born. On June 16, 1931, Edna was united in marriage with Harold Hague. They were the parents of two children. Edna and Harold farmed near Audubon on the Hague home place until 1942 when they moved to a farm east of Coon Rapids. They raised many chickens and as a result Edna learned to use the eggs they couldn’t market, the whites for her famous angel food cakes and the yolks for her equally famous noodles.
Edna was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. She also belonged to the local chapter of TTT for over 60 years. When she and Harold were able, they did a lot of traveling to visit their children and Edna’s siblings in Iowa. When Harold’s health began to fail, Edna cared for him at home until he became a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven. He died in January of 1991. She remained in their home until 1999 when she moved to the Thomas Rest Haven. While there she was active and happy, partaking in many activities. Edna’s health seriously deteriorated in mid-November 2009. She was transferred to St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll where she died on Friday, November 20, at the age of 97 years, 8 months and 8 days.
Preceding Edna in death are her parents; husband; granddaughter Tammy Smith; and siblings Wanda Hart, Wilma Meggison, Lillis Francis, Bernice Tuel, Kenneth Taggart and Rev. Darrel Taggart.
She is survived by her two children: Shirley and husband Byron Swedberg of Bellingham, WA and Mervin Hague and wife Audrey Joan of Gilbertsville; four grandchildren Julie and husband Lynn Hildebrand; Bradley Hague; Scott Swedberg and wife Jeannie and Steve Swedberg and wife Nicole; nine great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother Billie Taggart of Manning; other relatives and friends. Virginia Ernst
November 26, 2009 · Services for Virginia Louise Ernst of Coon Rapids were held Tuesday in the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. Rev. Lynn Gunderson officiated the morning service.
Ernst, 76, died in Clovis, CA on November 5 shortly after arriving there to spend the winter.
Casket bearers were Mike Carter, Ian Carter, Roger Petty, Gary Seastrom, Duane O’Tool and John Kult. Vocalist Cindy Seastrom sang three songs while accompanied by Lula Garnes. Interment was at East Linn Cemetery near Redfield.
VIRGINIA ERNST
Virginia Louise, daughter of Maurice Pleasant and Lillian Ruth (Fenner) Parker, was born June 10, 1933 at Des Moines IA along with her twin sister, Donna. The twins were baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Ft. Dodge and attended the Methodist Church in Melbourne, where the family lived until the girls were nine years old. At that time the family moved to Alameda, CA. Virginia attended Oakland, CA public schools.
In 1948 Virginia was united in marriage with Leroy Medeiros. They made their home in Oakland, CA and two children, David and Deborah, were born to this union. In 1952 Virginia was united in marriage with Edward Ernst, who adopted her children. Virginia and Edward had two sons, James and Jerry, and lived in several places in California. When her youngest son was a teenager, Virginia started working for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. While working there she attended Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA, earning her AA Degree in Management Supervision. She retired in 1993 after 25 years with the company.
In 1981 Virginia earned her private pilot’s license and flew her own plane for many years. Virginia enjoyed music and singing all of her life and learned to play the piano at the age of 62. She also enjoyed movies, gardening and reading. Her first love was quilting, which she took up later in life. In 1996 Virginia and Edward moved to Coon Rapids, IA where her twin sister had settled in 1993. Edward died on March 17, 2000.
Shortly after arriving in California for the winter of 2009, Virginia collapsed suddenly and unexpectedly. She died that same day Thursday, November 5 at the Clovis Community Hospital in Clovis, CA, at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 26 days.
Preceding her in death are her parents and husband. Virginia is survived by her children: David Ernst and wife Kay of Crockett, CA; Deborah and husband Jon Emerson of Stockton, CA; James Ernst of Angel’s Camp, CA; and Jerry Ernst and wife Debbie of Oregon; four grandchildren: Ryan and Emily Ernst, Aletha Doolan, and Sarah Emerson; one great grandson Carlos; twin sister Donna and husband Ed Bourdase of Coon Rapids; brother John Parker and wife Sonia of Union City, CA; other relatives and friends. Services for Doris A. Caldwell
November 19, 2009 · A memorial service for Doris A. Caldwell, 74, of Fort Madison is planned for a later date. The Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa is handling arrangements.
She is the mother of Jane Caldwell, formerly of Coon Rapids.
Doris Arlene Zachmeyer was born March 4, 1935 in Mt. Pleasant, IA the daughter of Thomas & Geneva (Woods) Zachmeyer. She married Kenneth Wayne Caldwell, M.D. on August 11, 1952 in Rome, IA. They later divorced. Doris was a homemaker and will be greatly missed by all who loved her and knew her.
Doris died Wednesday, November 11 at the West Point Care Center, West Point.
Survivors include her daughter, Jane Caldwell and son, Kenneth (Jan) Caldwell both of Iowa City; grandson, Kenneth (Becky) Caldwell of Cedar Rapids; great grandson, Logan Caldwell of Cedar Rapids; Sisters, Reatha Shearer of Lake Station, IN, Roslyn “Rosie” Kamp of Fort Madison, Alice (Sue) Kamp of Fort Madison, Margie (Ed) Hemm of Douds, IA; brothers, Don (Cass) Zachmeyer of Salem, IA, Larry (Linda) Zachmeyer of Fort Madison and David Zachmeyer of Sacramento, CA. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Edith Reed, Mary Zachmeyer, Shirley Zachmeyer and brothers, Billy, Jerry, John and Tom (Shorty) Zachmeyer.

Delores Elaine Brannan
Delores Elaine, daughter of Guy and Anna (Dryer) Lile, was born August 13, 1931, at Audubon. She grew up at Exira and graduated from Exira High School.
On May 5, 1956, Delores was united in marriage with Jerry Brannan at Council Bluffs. They farmed near Audubon and moved to Coon Rapids in 1959 where Delores worked as a waitress at the Northside Café, Southside Café and Southside Lounge. In 1972 they moved to Spencer where she waitressed and as a seamstress in a dress store. They returned to Audubon in 1984. Jerry died December 28, 1996.
Due to failing health, Delores moved to Coon Rapids in 2001. In 2003 she became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home where she died on Wednesday, November 4. She was 78 years old.
Delores enjoyed crocheting, sewing, baking – especially pies and cookies, having coffee with relatives and spending time with her grandchildren.
Delores is survived by two children: Deb Wiskus and husband Kenneth of Coon Rapids and John Brannan and wife Barbara of Bastrop, Texas; four grandchildren: Jeromie Wiskus and wife Jamie of Breda; Deanna Fagan and husband Bill of Manning; Julie Studebaker and husband Mike of Carroll; Shane Wiskus and fiancée Allie Thielen of Ross; eight great-grandchildren: Keagan, Bryce and Kyla Wiskus; Joesph Fagan; Dillon and Emma Studebaker; James Thielen and Ashley Wiskus; a step-granddaughter Cheryl Smith and husband Donnie and their son Michael of Georgetown, Texas; a sister Donna Jean Giermann of Kiron and a brother Walter Lile of Fort Dodge.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter Delma, in infancy; four brothers: Earl “Vern” Lile, Darwin Lile, Dallas Lile and Richard Lile; and a sister Edna in infancy.

Diane Klocke
October 29, 2009 · Mass of the Christian Burial for Diane Klocke, 56, of Coon Rapids was celebrated Wednesday, October 28 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. The Celebrant was Father Anthony Pick, assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners. Lectors were Angie Hagen, Jenny Determan, Kelley Burke, and Kelley Johnson. Gift Bearers were grandchildren, Megan Eischeid, Carter Eischeid, Lucas Lampe, Max Lampe, Ben Lampe, Emily Lampe, and Ryan Lampe. Mass Servers were Kelli and Tim Dentlinger. Eucharistic Ministers were Rachel Eischeid and Jane Schaefer. Casket Bearers were Patrick Volkir, Chris Hagen, Jon Hagen, Keith Seier, Spencer Klocke, and Nic Klocke. Graveside services were held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for the Second Chance Relay for Life Team.
Diane died Saturday, October 24 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Diane Klocke
Diane was born on December 22, 1952, at Sac City, the daughter of Joseph W. and Delores (Schramm) Determan. She attended Sacred Heart School at Early, St. Lawrence School in Carroll and graduated from Kuemper High School in 1971. She then attended the College of St. Mary in Omaha, Nebraska. On February 23, 1974, she was married to Duane Klocke at St. Joseph Church in Dedham. The couple farmed south of Dedham until 1984 when they moved to Coon Rapids. Since 1982 she has been employed as a Certified Insurance Counselor for the Coon Rapids Insurance Agency in Coon Rapids. She was a member of Annunciation Parish and was very active in the Relay for Life. Diane enjoyed her family, cooking, shopping, and her dog Midnight.
Survivors include her husband, Duane Klocke of Coon Rapids; children, Rachel Eischeid and her husband Thaine of Grimes, Lisa Lampe and her husband Joseph of Carroll, Laura Klocke of Madison, Wisc., and Philip Klocke of Carroll; seven grandchildren, Megan Eischeid, Carter Eischeid, Lucas Lampe, Max Lampe, Ben Lampe, Emily Lampe, and Ryan Lampe; her mother, Delores Determan of Carroll; sisters, JoAnn Jensen and her husband Ron of North Beach, Maryland, Jean Blum and her husband Jerry of Auburn, Barbara Seier and her husband Bill of Naperville, Illinois, Patricia Adams and her husband H.L. of Winter Haven, Florida, and Mary Hagen and her husband Ron of Rice Lake, Wisc.; her brothers, Donald Determan and his wife Mary of Ft. Pierce, Florida, David Determan and his wife Jeanne of Akron, Michael Determan and his wife Stephanie of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert Determan of Bellevue, Nebr., James Determan and his wife Marjorie of Lincoln, Nebr., and Thomas Determan and his wife Janna of Lakeland, Florida; her father and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Bethene Klocke of Carroll; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Gary Schaefer of Carroll, Keith and Karen Klocke of Villisca, and Dean and Monica Klocke of Dedham.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Determan; and a brother, John Determan, in infancy.

Richard Long
October 15, 2009 · A private service was held at Orange Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids for Richard Long on Saturday, October 10.
The service was conducted by Richard’s nephew, Vic Long.
Richard was a 1954 graduate of CRHS and a brother of Millie Golay of Coon Rapids.

Richard Lee Long
Richard (Dick) Lee Long, son of Earney and Florence (Shoesmith) Long was born on February 11, 1936 at his home in Guthrie County. He graduated from Coon Rapids High School in Coon Rapids in May of 1954. Following high school, Dick served in the United States Army for two years. Through the years he was self-employed as a salesman mostly in Oklahoma. Dick passed away at the Veteran’s Hospital in Muskogee, OK on June 26 at the age of 73 following his battle with pancreatic cancer.
Dick enjoyed life to the fullest and loved socializing with family and friends. He was a great story teller, and entertained family and friends with stories of life’s adventures.
Dick is survived by one sister, Millie Golay and her husband Charles of Coon Rapids; one brother, Jerry Long of Wagoner, OK and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Donald and Robert Long; sister Pauline Gouge; brother-in-law, Harold Gouge and sisters-in-law, Sue Long and Betty Long.

Bernice Ohde
October 15, 2009 · Funeral services for Bernice M. Ohde were Tuesday, October 13, at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.
Casket Bearers were Ron Muhlbauer, Roger Heinz, Rick Dammann, Claus Bunz, Dr. Philip Myer and Bryce Schaben.
Interment was in Manning Cemetery, Manning.
Bernice Margaret Ohde
Bernice Margaret, daughter of George and Ida Margaret (Roggendorf) Dethlefs, was born December 2, 1916 at Alton, where her father operated a picture show (movie theater). When she was a toddler the family moved to Manning where her parents owned and operated the Klean Klose Shop on Main Street. Bernice attended Manning schools, graduating with the Class of 1934. Following her graduation she worked at Rober-Wehrman Department Store as a bookkeeper for five years.
On February 26, 1939, Bernice was united in marriage with William Franklin Ohde at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Four children were born to this union. Bernice helped her husband in the Ohde Funeral Home business, though she was primarily a wonderful homemaker. They lived above the funeral home for many years before moving to their home on Blaine Street in Manning.
Bernice enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, crocheting and needle point. She was a member of Zatetic Study Club and served as treasurer of the Manning Hospital Auxiliary for many years. As a girl, Bernice enjoyed playing tennis and was often the baseball pitcher or catcher for her brother Kenny. Later on she became an avid golfer earning medalist honors at the local golf course many times. Over the years Bernie and Bill played in many couples golf tournaments around the state. They also traveled to and played golf courses in Florida and California. Bernice was an outstanding cook and baker, seldom following the recipes exactly.
When Bernice’s health began to fail and her husband could no longer care for her at home she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. After suffering a stroke in early October 2009, she was transferred to the Manning General Hospital where she died on Sunday, October 11 at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 9 days.
Preceding her in death are her parents and brother Kenneth Dethlefs and his wife Virginia.
She is survived by her husband Bill Ohde of Manning; four children: Ruth Ohde of Manning; Linda and husband George Farley of Lake Bluff, IL; Bill Ohde of Palm Springs, CA and John Ohde and wife Jackie and her children Sam, Ben and Sydney of Manning; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Ron Beaver and wife Kathleen and their son James (JP) of Woodinville, WA; Alison and husband Mark River and their daughter Abigail of Manning; Julia Bachman and her daughter Olivia of Manning and John Bachman and wife Wendy and their sons Charlie and Ben of Denver, CO; two nieces JoAnn and husband Jim Karsten and Georgia and husband Rick Lohrmann both of Manning; other relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Manning Regional Healthcare Foundation.

October 08, 2009 · Mass of the Christian Burial for Julie Park was Monday October 5 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Scranton with Father Steven McLoud as celebrant.
Lectors were Ruth Naberhaus and Cleo Duff. Gift Bearers were Julie’s sisters: Mary Jo, Terri, Kathy, Trish, and Jan. Mass server was Becka Eslick and Eucharistic Minister was Jan Morlan.
Interment was in the Holy Family Cemetery at Lidderdale.

Julie Ann Park
Julie Ann Park, age 50 of Bayard and formerly of Scranton died at the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids on Oct 1. She was born on May 15, 1959 at Carroll and was the daughter of Robert and Carol (West) Park. She grew up in the Scranton Community and attended and graduated from Scranton High School in 1977. She had worked at Sparky’s in Bayard for several years. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, TV, puzzles, playing cards, watching the Hawkeyes and the Cubs on TV. Julie was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Scranton.
Surviving are her mother Carol Park of Scranton, a sister Mary Jo Halterman of Coon Rapids; a brother Andy Park of Barnum; a brother Jon Park of Barnum; a sister Terri Renwanz and her husband Bill of Jefferson; a sister Kathy Geuss and her husband Eric of Harper Woods, Michigan; a sister Trish Monthei and her husband Mike of Panora; and a sister Jan Kirschman and her husband Rick of Ankeny; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, two brothers, Steven and Michael; and her grandparents, Jack and Pearl West and Carl and Ernestine Park.

October 08, 2009 · Lee M. Welsh of Windsor Heights, 98, died Wednesday, September 30 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were Saturday, October 3 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.
Burial was at Ridgedale Cemetery in Johnston.
Lee Michael Welsh
Lee Michael Welsh was born in Coon Rapids on May 5, 1911 to Daniel and Elizabeth Welsh. He attended Annunciation Catholic School, Coon Rapids High School and Drake University. Lee lived in Des Moines for over 70 years and retired as vice president and treasurer of Polk County Federal Savings and Loan in 1989. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and the St. Theresa Holy Name Society, the Tobas Club and the Hyperion Club. He was an Emeritus Life Associate of the National Association of Accountants. He enjoyed golf, duck hunting and rose gardening.
Survivors include Lee’s daughter, Suzanne (John) Malcom of Arlington Heights, IL; son, Michael (Janine) Welsh of Bloomington, IL; six grandchildren, Ryan Malcom M.D., Joseph Malcom, David Malcom, Michael Malcom and Nathaniel Welsh all of Chicago, Sarah (Derek) Ladgenski of Wheaton, IL and Deirdre (Eric) Noshay of Glenview, IL; five great grandchildren, Grace, Vivian, Emma and Quinn Ladgenski and Foster Noshay; and one brother, Daniel Welsh D.D.S. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadyne; parents and four siblings, Kathleen McLaughlin, Woodrow Welsh, Virginia Welsh and Elizabeth Lewis.
