Leonard Sporrer
November 20, 2008 · Leonard Sporrer, age 93, of Dedham, died unexpectedly on Monday, November 17 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 21 at St. Joseph Church in Dedham.
The Celebrant will be Father Anthony Pick assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners.
Lectors will be Trish Wieland-Lingenfelter, Bev Ramsey, Joel Flug, and Jennifer Handlos. Gift Bearers will be Marvin Sporrer, LaVonne Thobe, Jan Wieland, Joan Irlmeier, and Cletus Sporrer. Mass Servers will be Jesse Sporrer, Chris Sporrer, and Mike Behrens. Eucharistic Ministers will be Arlene Wanninger, Bernice Thobe, Audrey Behrens, and Melvin Sporrer.
The Templeton Knights of Columbus will form an honor guard at the church for the funeral mass.
Casket Bearers will be Doug Wanninger, Chad Sporrer, Kevin Sporrer, Terry Thobe, Mike Thobe, Brian Wieland, Dan Behrens, Jason Sporrer, Paul Irlmeier, Phil Irlmeier, and Brad Sporrer.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Dedham.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. Thursday. A rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. Thursday by the Templeton Knights of Columbus. There will be a Christian wake service at 7:00 p.m. Thursday by St. Joseph Parish.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for the Dedham First Responders.
Leonard Sporrer
Mr. Sporrer was born on September 10, 1915, at Dedham, the son of Joseph and Rose (Sextro) Sporrer. He spent his lifetime in the Dedham community and attended St. Joseph School. On October 27, 1936, he was married to Sabina Heithoff at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. The couple farmed west of Dedham and in 1945 moved to Dedham where they owned the meat market until 1954 when they moved back to their farm. They retired in 1971 and moved to their home in Dedham. In addition to farming Mr. Sporrer operated a bulldozing business for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Knights of Columbus, Dedham Booster Club, and the Carroll County Fair Board. Mr. Sporrer was elected to the Carroll County Board of Supervisors in 1974 and served until 1992. He was a former member of the Dedham School Board, Dedham City Council, Carroll County Soil Conservation Board, and the Des Moines Watershed Committee. He enjoyed his family, horses, hunting, and practicing soil conservation.
Survivors include his children, Arlene Wanninger of Coon Rapids, Marvin Sporrer and his wife Susie of Dedham, LaVonne Thobe of Carroll, Bernice Thobe and her husband Marvin of Audubon, Jan Wieland of Templeton, Audrey Behrens and her husband Bob of Manning, Melvin Sporrer and his wife Kathy of Portsmouth, Joan Irlmeier of Coon Rapids, and Cletus Sporrer and his wife Bev of Templeton; daughters-in-law, Wanda Sporrer of Carroll and Betty Klocke and her husband Tom of Coon Rapids; 51 grandchildren; 70 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; brothers, Joseph Sporrer and his wife Mary Kay of Dedham and Harold Sporrer and his wife Rita of Manning; sisters, Sally Heithoff of Coon Rapids, Mary Trecker of Carroll, and Arlene Kasperbauer of Dedham; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold Heithoff of Templeton, Helene Heithoff of Manning, Helen Heithoff of Audubon, Elaine Sporrer of Templeton, and Lawrence and Marjorie Schultes of Carroll. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sabina Sporrer, in February 2007; a daughter, Joyce Irlmeier; a son, Jerry Sporrer; two sons in infancy; sons-in-law, Don Wanninger, John Thobe, and Gary Irlmeier; a granddaughter, Mary Ann Wanninger; brothers, John and Clarence Sporrer; and sisters, Alma Forke and Rosie Hacker.

Ethel Smouse
November 20, 2008 · Services for Ethel Smouse of Coon Rapids were Tuesday, November 18 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Reverend Lynn Gunderson as celebrant.
Casket Bearers were Richard Vaughan, Charly Hughes, Robert Brumback, Amos Royer, Max Cline and Reid Bowman.
Interment was at the Orange Township Cemetery south of Coon Rapids.
Ethel Beulah Smouse
Ethel Beulah, daughter of Nels A. and Carrie (Mattson) Nelson was born May 2, 1915 at Fiscus. She attended country school near her home in Guthrie County. Ethel then worked in Omaha, Nebraska at Wilson Packing.
On February 7, 1946 Ethel was united in marriage with Jake T. Smouse at the Gospel Tabernacle in Omaha by Rev. R.R. Brown. A daughter, Donna, was born into this union. Ethel and Jake made their home in Coon Rapids, where they owned and operated Smouse Jewelry Store until their retirement in 1983.
As a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ethel was active in leading group meetings and in the offices of the secretary and treasurer. She was also a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge.
In 2001, Ethel became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids. She died there on November 14 at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 12 days.
Besides her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by a grandson Jacob “Jake” Hughes; sister Helen Brumback; and brothers John, Art, Clarence and Sam Nelson.
She is survived by her husband Jake Smouse of Coon Rapids; daughter Donna and husband Charly Hughes of Story City; granddaughter-in-law Jennifer Hughes of Gilbert, Arizona; great-granddaughter Kelsey Hughes; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

November 13, 2008 · Services for Glenn Betts of Coon Rapids was Tuesday, November 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids.

Interment was in the Union Township Cemetery east of Coon Rapids.
Glenn Alfred Betts
Glenn Alfred, son of Alfred and Floy (Heater) Betts, was born May 25, 1923 near Coon Rapids in Carroll County. He attended Coon Rapids school until moving to Bayard where he graduated from Bayard High School in 1942.
On December 8, 1948 Glenn was united in marriage with Lorene Johnston at Coon Rapids. Two children, Duane and Mary, were born to this union. Following their marriage they began farming south of Coon Rapids and moved to a farm north of town in the early 1960’s. Glenn continued farming after moving into the family’s new home in town in 1974. While farming he was very active in the National Farmers Organization, serving as secretary for many years. He retired in 1999, but he remained loyal to the farming cause, passionately believing that treating farmers fairly is the key to a thriving economy. A highlight of every weekday for many years was Congregate Meals, where Glenn enjoyed eating with friends and helping with the books. Glenn was devoted to his grandchildren, following all of their activities and lives with interest and pride. He loved CR-B sports – football, girls’ and boys’ basketball, and baseball provided him much enjoyment during his last few years.
Glenn had been slowed by heart problems for the past several years and died suddenly at home in Coon Rapids on Friday, November 7. He was 85 years, 5 months and 13 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lorene Betts; brother Clyde Betts; brother-in-law Paul Dobson; and grandson Travis Schwaller.
Glenn is survived by his son Duane Betts of Marshall, MN; daughter Mary and husband Jim Schwaller of Coon Rapids; seven grandchildren: Kenya and husband Aaron Cox; Kristen and husband Jonathan Mackey; Kara and husband Robert Douglas; Duane Betts, Jr.; Tyler Schwaller; Johnny Schwaller; and Zachary Kuebler; great-grandchildren Kobe Cox and Konner Mackey; sister Florence Dobson of Alamo, TX; sister-in-law Vivian Betts of Jefferson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends

Lois Saggau
November 13, 2008 · Funeral services for Lois Saggau of Des Moines will be Saturday, November 15 at 10 a.m. at West Des Moines United Methodist Church at 720 Grand Ave, West Des Moines.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home at 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Iowa Hall of Pride Foundation, 303 Park Street, Des Moines, Iowa, 50309, or the Des Moines Women’s Club. Memorials may also be sent to the Saggau home, 501 South 28th Street, West Des Moines 50265.
Lois Saggau, wife of former IHSAA Executive Director Bernie Saggau, passed away early Monday morning at the Cavanaugh House in Des Moines.
Lois (Kretzinger) Saggau
Lois (Kretzinger) Saggau was born in Coon Rapids and married Bernie Saggau in 1952. The couple had three children, Jeff (deceased), Becky and David.
Lois was a devoted wife, mother and friend.
For many years, the Saggau’s made their residence in Boone. Bernie served as the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Executive Director from 1963 until his retirement, January 1, 2005.
In later years, the couple moved to West Des Moines as both Lois and Bernie remained active in civic and state events. Lois was a member of the Des Moines Women’s Club and was a supporter of Hoyt Sherman Place and Bernie continued to be active with the Iowa Hall of Pride Museum.

Maxine Botts
November 13, 2008 · Funeral services for Maxine Botts of Bayard was Wednesday, November 12 at the Church of Christ in Bayard with Pastor Bob Rogers officiating.
Casket Bearers were Tom Moore, Lonnie Bench, Nyle Hay, Alfred Wessling, William Cornish and Tim Hilgenberg.
Interment was at the Highland Township Cemetery south of Bayard.
Memorials may be made to the Church of Christ or the American Legion Auxiliary in Bayard.
Maxine Bernice Botts
Maxine Bernice, daughter of Thomas Wayde Freesh and Martha Ellen “Ella” (Pulver) Freesh, was born November 4, 1913, on a farm near Bayard in Guthrie County. Maxine attended rural school near her home as a young girl. She graduated from Bayard High School in 1932. She stayed at home and helped on the farm for a short time.
On November 9, 1934, Maxine was united in marriage with Frank Marris Botts at the minister’s parsonage in Spencer, Iowa. They returned home the next day, both going to their own family as they had no place else to live. The word of their marriage did not stay a secret for long. The next spring they moved to a farm place north of Guthrie Center. During World War II, Maxine was able to stay with Frank during some of his military training. In South Carolina she worked part time as a store clerk and waitress. The Southern ladies refused to let her serve them because she was a Northerner. Her boss gave her some useful advice….”Just say ‘y’all’ and they’ll let you serve them.” Maxine adopted his idea and her Yankee background wasn’t a problem again.
After the war, they returned to Guthrie County. She worked at Ben Franklin Stores in Guthrie Center and Audubon. In 1947 they purchased their first insurance agency in Bayard. They worked together, eventually acquiring another agency. Maxine worked in the office as Frank was often gone because he was a rural mail carrier.
Maxine was a loyal and active member of the Church of Christ in Bayard. She was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as county president for four years and membership chair. She was known as “Bayard’s Poppy Lady”, raising money for veterans for many years.
After they retired Maxine and Frank remained in Bayard for a number of years and in 2004 moved to independent living apartments at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry. Maxine suffered some health problems late in 2006 and in January of 2007 entered the Rowley Nursing Facility in Perry. She endured many painful months before her death there on Sunday, November 9 at the age of 95 years and 5 days.
Preceding Maxine in death are her parents and sister Beulah Reinhart.
She is survived by her husband Frank Botts of Perry; two nieces Elaine and husband Don Peebles of Clearmont, FL and Jeanette and husband Chet Sargent of Scranton; two nephews Keith Reinhart and wife Ruby of Scranton and Leslie Reinhart of Scranton; cousins, other relatives and friends.

Carolyn Perkins
November 13, 2008 · Funeral services for Carolyn Perkins of Coon Rapids were Monday, November 10 at the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids with Pastor Ben Ramirez officiating.
Casket Bearers were Wiltsie Cretsinger, Bill Jahn, Gavin Cretsinger, Stuart Cretsinger, Ethan Cretsinger and Dave Bowman.
Interment was in the Merle Hay Cemetery in Glidden.
Carolyn Charlotte
Perkins
Carolyn Charlotte, daughter of Roy and Laura J. (Coffman) Buckley, was born August 1, 1919, in Coon Rapids. She grew up on the “Buckley” family farm south of Coon Rapids. Carolyn attended country school at Orange #2 and attended Coon Rapids High School, where she was active in the band, glee club and sextets, graduating in May 1937.
Carolyn then worked at the Armour Creamery until 1941 when she moved to Mount Morris, Illinois and worked for a magazine distribution company. She returned to Coon Rapids in 1943 for a short time before moving to Waterloo to work as an office clerk for John Deere Tractor Company.
On June 25, 1947, Carolyn was united in marriage with Robert Meade Perkins at the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids. Carolyn and Bob made their home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1947, returned to Coon Rapids in 1950 and relocated to Chicago, Illinois in 1955. Carolyn worked at the Pure Oil Company while Bob attended school. In 1957 they moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where Bob made a career in Electronics Engineering. Carolyn and Bob adopted son Bruce in October of 1958. Carolyn worked as a substitute Teacher’s Aide and did laundry work for 10 years at the Golden Years Nursing Home. She was an active member of the Cedar Creek Church of Christ in Fort Wayne for 27 years. Her husband died on February 20, 2000 and Carolyn returned to Coon Rapids the next year. Throughout the years, Carolyn’s warm smile was always a hallmark of her loving personality.
Carolyn was an active member of the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids. Carolyn enjoyed music, especially singing solos and with the church choir, embroidery, and traveling when she was able, especially returning to Coon Rapids.
In May of 2004, Carolyn moved into the Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids. She died there on Friday, November 7 at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 6 days.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Arnold Buckley and wife Doris; sister-in-law Marilyn Buckley and nephew Nicholas Buckley.
She is survived by a son Bruce Perkins and wife Gabriele of El Paso, Texas; five grandchildren; Megan Greene and Damien Perkins of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Dave, Sheila, and Dan Perkins, all of El Paso, Texas; three great-grandchildren; brother Paul Buckley of Okoboji; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many caring friends.

Eunice May Bonney
Eunice May, daughter of Benjamin and Myrtle Knight Hartwigsen, was born April 27, 1925, at home southeast of Glidden. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Glidden High School in 1943. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and started teaching country school in the Glidden and Coon Rapids area.
On January 11, 1945, Eunice was united in marriage with Harold Herbert Bonney at the Presbyterian parsonage in Des Moines. Six children were born to this union. They lived on various farms near Glidden. Eunice worked at the egg plant in Glidden and at Franklin Manufacturing in Jefferson until her retirement. The family moved to Coon Rapids in 1983. After Harold died on April 17, 1999, Eunice was able to remain in their home until becoming a resident of the Carroll Manor in January of 2002. Eunice died there on November 10, 2008 at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 14 days.
Eunice was a member of Pleasant Ridge Community Church near Glidden and was a member of her labor union in Jefferson. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, playing piano, solving crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.
Eunice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Dick Behner, brother Roy Hartwigsen and wife Evelyn, and brothers-in-law John, Theodore, and Richard Bonney.
She is survived by six children: Marilyn and husband Steve Sporleder of Lidderdale, Diane Kraus of Lidderdale, Donna and husband Fred Sigler of Coon Rapids, Jane Behner of Tucson, AZ, Dennis Bonney and wife Tamara of Coon Rapids and Mark Bonney and wife Jodi of Bayard; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 step-grandchild; sister Fern and husband Daryl Betts of Bayard; brother-in-law Cleo Bonney and wife LaVonna of Omaha, NE; sisters-in-law Mary Bonney of Coon Rapids and Delores Bonney of Aurora, CO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

November 06, 2008 · Mass of Christian Burial for Frank Knueven of Coon Rapids was Monday, November 3 at the Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids.
Celebrants were Reverend Anthony Pick of the Annunciation Church, Reverend Dale Reiff of Sacred Heart Church and Deacon Louie Meiners of the Annunciation Church.

FRANK H. KNUEVEN
Frank Henry, son of John and Mary (Sporrer) Knueven, was born October 22, 1920 at the family home near Templeton. Frank attended Sacred Heart School in Templeton. After completing his education, Frank worked with his parents on the family farm.
On September 16, 1943, Frank was united in marriage with Claudia Stewart at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. Two children were born to this union. Frank and Claudia farmed with his parents until his parents’ deaths. He then purchased the farm where he was born and Frank and Claudia continued to live and work on the farm until 2004 when they moved to Coon Rapids to be nearer family.
Frank was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Templeton most of his life and was a paid up lifetime member of the Templeton Council Knights of Columbus. After moving to Coon Rapids, he and Claudia became members of Annunciation Parish.
In his spare time Frank enjoyed farming, making crafts, attending craft sales and school events. He also enjoyed fishing and had hoped to fish more frequently after moving to Coon Rapids. However, his health began to fail and he did not have the energy to go fishing. After being diagnosed with cancer, he was cared for at home by his loving wife and family until October 15, when he became a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids. He died there on Friday, October 31 at the age of 88 years and 9 days.
Preceding Frank in death are his parents; twin brother Joseph Knueven; sister Anna had her husband Harold Walsh; brother Louis Knueven and his wife Arlyne and foster brother Edward Foley and his wife Marcella; granddaughter Jackie Knueven, in infancy; brothers-in-law Floyd Lacy, Frank Bumpilori and Al Lechtenberg.
Frank is survived by his wife Claudia Knueven of Coon Rapids; son Patrick Knueven and wife Mary of Des Moines; daughter Patricia and husband David Kading of Casey; ten grandchildren: Sheryl Swalla; Lisa Kopaska; John Knueven; Tracy Knueven; Theresa Miller; Jeffrey Hartl; Bradley Knueven; Christopher Hartl; Kelly Knueven; and Jason Knueven; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law Marian Knueven of Manning, Lois Lacy of Audubon, Frances Bumpilori of Des Moines, and Elaine Lechtenberg of Denison; two brothers-in-law Stresley Stewart and wife Doris of Des Moines and Franklin Stewart and wife Mary of Des Moines; cousin Anna J. Sporrer of Carroll; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Marden Blanchard
October 30, 2008 · Marden Lester “Pat” Blanchard, 81, formerly of Coon Rapids, went on to eternal life with Jesus on October 8 at a nursing home in Des Moines.
Graveside service was held on Saturday, October 11 at the Union Township Cemetery in Coon Rapids. Pat was buried next to his parents and older brother. His son-in-law, Gary Walter, officiated the service and gave the eulogy.
Marden Lester Blanchard
A second son of Zachary “Clarence” and Melitta (Wegner) Blanchard, Marden was born November 27, 1926 on a farm near Carrollton, Iowa. He attended Carrollton Schools until 10th Grade. After this, he graduted from Coon Rapids High School in the 40s.
Upon graduation, he entered American Business Institute in Des Moines. While in Des Moines, he married Nellie Liddle in 1947. The five children born to this union were: Rhonda, Michael, Sherry, Debbie and James. The marriage union ended in 1957.
Pat moved to Florida where he began training and racing greyhounds. While there he established his own kennel. He became well known in Florida greyhound racing circles. In 1969, he married Lou Sampson. Their marriage ended in 1986. Pat moved back to the Des Moines area in 2001.
A few months before his passing, Pat found the comfort of knowing Jesus and developing a relationship with him. Now, he is forever walking beside his Savior in Heaven.
Survivors include his daughters: Rhonda (Gary) Walter of Des Moines; Sherry (Allen) Francesco of Austin, Texas; Debra (Harold) Parson of Clinton, Illinois and Vickie McDaniel of Orlando, Florida; his son: James (Melissa) Blanchard of Florida; his sisters: Maradell Mahler of West Des Moines, Verneva (Kenneth) Stevens of Glidden; his brother: Derwyn (Betty) of California; a sister-in-law: Dorothy Blanchard of Coon Rapids; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Steven Blanchard at age 19; his parents, Melitta in 1958, Clarence in 1966; his brother, DeLane in 1999 and brother-in-law, Revilo Mahler in 1989.

October 16, 2008 · Funeral services for Darrell Booth of Bagley were Friday, October 10 at Hastings Funeral Home Jefferson.
Words of comfort were provided by Pastor Charles Thompson, of the Greenbrier United Methodist Church, Greene County.

Darrell Dean Booth
Darrell Dean Booth, son of Paul C Booth and Virginia Peterson Booth, was born October 3, 1951 in Jefferson and died October 6 at his farm home in Greenbrier Township near Bagley; at the age of 57 years and 3 days.
Darrell lived on the same farm his entire life and graduated from Bayard High School in 1969. He farmed with his father and also worked at American Athletic Equipment from 1969 until the fall of 1978. When his father’s health failed, Darrell gave up his job to attend just to the farm. Darrell was married to Kathy Jean Lowe July 28, 1979. They are the parents of one son, Bryan, and one daughter, Jill. He later worked for PMA, Professional Machinery Assembly in Bayard from 1995 until 2007 when his health would not allow him to work.
Darrell loved tinkering in his shop, country dancing, and watching MASH on television for many years, but his greatest love was his family. He and grandson, Ely, instantly bonded and they were best buddies. Darrell enjoyed his membership in the Greenbrier Church and was also a Farm Bureau member.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Virginia. He will be greatly missed by his wife Kathy of Bagley; son Bryan and wife Heather; grandson Ely; daughter Jill and friend Jason Kroeger; all of Jefferson; sister Connie Biondi and husband Roger of Johnston; nephew Mike Biondi and friend Lisa Mefferd of Des Moines; niece Paula Suckow and husband Jim of Urbandale; three great-nephews; brother of his heart, Dennis Murphy and wife Terry of Jefferson; mother-in-law Jean Lowe of Jefferson; sister-in-law Lori Tibbs and husband Jack of Cedar Rapids; other relatives and many, many friends.

Kathy Van Wert
October 09, 2008 · Funeral services for Kathy Van Wert, 57, of Charles City will be Thursday, October 9 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City at 1:00 p.m. Pastors Ron Hall and Bob Culbertson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery at Hampton.
Kathy died Friday, October 3. Kathy’s beautiful spirit slipped away to return to God as she slept in the early morning hours at the Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National Park, WY. She and Gary were on a get-away vacation together enjoying the beautiful fall colors of Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.

Kathy Jeanne
(Baldwin) Van Wert
Kathy Jeanne (Baldwin) Van Wert was born July 28, 1951, in Hampton, the daughter of George E. and Helen (Mutzel) Baldwin. She graduated from the Hampton Community High School in 1969. She attended Marycrest College and graduated with honors from Marshalltown Community School of Nursing, earning the Mae McCombs Award for Maternity Nursing. She was employed as a Registered Nurse throughout her career life, at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital as the office nurse for Dr. Richard Weidner at Wolfe Clinic in Marshalltown, and as a nurse consultant for The Bankers Life (now The Principal Financial Group) from which she retired in July of this year. She had been a member of T.T.T., P.E.O., the Case Manager Association, the United Methodist Women, and the Trinity United Methodist Church.
Kathy married Gary on August 8, 1971, in Hampton and had lived in Marshalltown, Des Moines, Urbandale, Cedar Rapids, Coon Rapids and Charles City. Three children were given to this union: Michelle (David Kosalka) Van Wert Kosalka, of Milwaukee, WI, Jeffrey (stillborn), and Kim of Cedar Falls. Kathy was a wonderful and devoted wife, mom, and grandma who enjoyed being with people of all walks of life.
Her smile, her perseverance, her determination, and her courage have been an inspiration to many people. She was determined to never give up, to never have a bad day, and to show the love of Christ to all who came along her path. Her smile and her sparkle linger on in the hearts of those she has loved. God blessed Kathy with many loving friends and a great family.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Rev. Gary Van Wert, of Charles City; her two daughters, Shelly and Kim; her grandson, Christopher Charles Van Wert; her brother, David Baldwin of Manhattan, KS; her special aunt, Lillian Craighton, of Hampton; several close cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Jeffrey.

Ada Ruth Bolger
Ada Ruth, daughter of Wesley Lynk and Freyda Elsina (Weaver) Thomas, was born March 1, 1917 on a farm in the Star Community of Union Township, Carroll County. She attended Star School and Star M.E. Sunday School, graduated from Coon Rapids High School, and attended classes at Des Moines Area Community College.
On May 8, 1934 Ruth was united in marriage with Glenn Harold Bolger. Six children blessed this union. They moved to Glenn’s Aunt Laura Anderson’s farm in the spring of 1937. Ruth continued to live there until November 1993 when she moved to Westwood Knolls Retirement Center in Carroll. In April of 2007 she became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids.
Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, PEO Sisterhoods DW & EB and Clio Club. The other organizations to which she belonged were a means to serve others, especially youth and older adults. She enjoyed reading, music and Bible study.
Due to declining health, Ruth entered Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and she died there on September 25 at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 15 days.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Glenn in 1971; parents; mother-in-law Hazel Bolger; sister Dorothy (Lewis) Krenmyre; brothers Wesley Thomas and Wilber Thomas; son-in-law Paul Conner and two infant granddaughters.
Ruth is survived by her six children: Carolyn Diane Bolger Conner, Glidden, IA; Robert Glenn (Carolyn) Bolger, Baton Rouge, LA; Nancy Ruth Bolger (William) Smith, Emporia, KS; Alan Thomas (Joleen) Bolger, Grimes, IA; Joel Harold (Cheryl) Bolger, Kodiak, AK; and Janice Joy Bolger, Centerville, IA; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 7 step great-grandchildren; 4 step great-great-grandchildren; sister May (George) Opperman, Beloit, WI; sisters-in-law Mary “Betty” Thomas, Coon Rapids; Maureen Thomas, Omaha, NE; Claire Grimm, Perry; and many other relatives and friends.

Hilda Haukap
October 02, 2008 · Hildagard “Hilda” Haukap, age 98, of Dedham died Wednesday, Sept. 24, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, September 29 at St. Joseph Church in Dedham.
The Celebrant was Father Anthony Pick, assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners. Lector was Sharon Mescher. Gift Bearers were Valerie Dobson and Mariah Railsback. Mass Servers were Amy Becker and Autumn Schulz. Casket Bearers were Tom Haukap, Kreg Haukap, Adam Haukap, Ross Dobson, Tony Haukap, Michael Railsback, Corey Haukap, and Brandon Haukap.
Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton.
Hildagard Haukap
Mrs. Haukap was born on August 14, 1910, at Mt. Carmel, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Petersohn) Schenkelberg, Sr. In 1913, her family moved to the Templeton community where she attended Sacred Heart School. On Feb. 3, 1931, she was married to Herman A. Haukap at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton with Msgr. F.H. Heusman officiating. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Templeton until 1936 when they moved to Dedham. From 1944 until 1954 Mrs. Haukap owned and operated Hilda’s Café in Dedham and later was employed at the Dedham Post Office, Bueltel Meat Market, and Pletchette Grocery Store. She retired in 1980. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and 78 year member of the Templeton Catholic Daughters of America.
Mrs. Haukap enjoyed her family, cooking, crocheting, bird watching, bowling, playing cards, and volunteering at church.
Survivors include 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; two step great great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marie Huff of St. Louis, MO; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman Haukap, in Aug. 1992; two daughters in infancy; a son, Patrick Haukap, in March 1998; five sisters, Mary Schenkelberg, Theresa Bueltel, Catherine Waller, Elizabeth A’Hearn, and Anna Mescher; and seven brothers, Bernard, Peter, Henry A., Edward, Lambert, Matthias, and Julius Schenkelberg.

Helen Josephine Nissen
Helen Josephine, daughter of Seth and Roxy (Cretsinger) Parker, was born March 4, 1921 at Coon Rapids. She graduated from Coon Rapids High School where she was a basketball star and one of the first 18 people inducted into the Iowa Hall of Fame. Helen earned the nickname “Tuffy” in school, and it stuck with her throughout her life. She studied business at A.I.B. and played basketball, earning All-American status. As a result of her basketball career she modeled for Converse sneakers.
On May 11, 1944 Helen was united in marriage with George Nissen at Elk Horn. George was enlisted in the Navy, and the family lived in Elk Horn until moving to Bayard in the early 1960’s. In addition to being a homemaker and mother, Helen worked at the Bayard Care Center for a couple of years. Then she worked in the laundry at the Woodward State Hospital from 1965 until her retirement in the late 1980’s. Together with her husband, she then ran Nissen Crafts, traveling to sell their crafts at fairs in the area. Helen’s first priority was her family and it was very important to her to pass on the gifts of spiritual love and compassion for others to her children.
George died in 1993 and within the year Helen moved to the Adel Manor in Adel. She was hospitalized at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines for a few weeks before she died there on Monday, September 29. She was 87 years, 6 months and 25 days of age.
Preceding Helen in death are her parents Seth and Roxy Parker; husband George Nissen; daughter Gynet Nissen; son Marty Nissen; grandson Cory Nissen and niece Roxy Weddum.
She is survived by six children: Mark Nissen and wife Carol of Des Moines; Georgina and husband Gailain Coenen of Grimes; Marda and husband Richard Volkamer of Ankeny; Ginger and husband Larry Hilgenberg of Coon Rapids; Myron Nissen of Denton, TX; Galan Nissen and wife Pat of Ankeny; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters Edith Bandel and Leila Weddum, both of Mesa, AZ; brother Gurney Parker of Mesa, AZ and their families; other relatives and friends.

Inurnment was in the Valley View Cemetery, Graettinger.
Sterling Lee Hansen
Sterling Lee Hansen, son of Timmy Hansen and Michelle (Knudsen) Sarratt, was born February 2, 1988, in Emmetsburg. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Coon Rapids. Sterling attended school in Emmetsburg before moving to Canton, SD where he graduated from Canton High School.
Sterling was currently living in Coon Rapids where he was employed for Tri-R Farms. He loved working on the farm and being outdoors. He was always ready to go hunting or fishing and he loved four wheeling and riding his dirt bike.
Sterling and Suzie Ralfs have a little girl, Jayden Rae. She is two years old and was the love of her dad’s life. Sterling also has two nephews that he loves being with, Talen and Keaton Hansen.
Sterling passed away Saturday, August 23 at his home in Coon Rapids. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Forrest Hansen; great grandparents, Leonard and Beatrice Knudsen and Roy and Louise Lucht; and an uncle, Eddie Lee Hansen.
He is survived by Suzie Ralfs and their daughter, Jayden of Canton, SD; his mother, Michelle Sarratt and her friend, Dave Hitzman of Centerville, SD; his father, Timmy Hansen and his friend, Cindy Baker of Emmetsburg; his sisters, Amber Hansen of Sioux Falls, SD and her fiancé, Alex Hise, Kela Hansen of Centerville, SD and Taira Hansen of Nemo, SD; his nephews, Talen Craig and Keaton Ray Hansen of Sioux Falls, SD; his grandparents, Richard and Betty Knudsen of Coon Rapids and Anna Marie Hansen of Audubon; as well as many, many friends.
Even though Sterling’s life ended after only twenty years his memory will carry on with everyone who knew and loved him.

Joseph Determan
August 28, 2008 · Mass of the Christian Burial for Joseph Determan, 90 of Carroll will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, (today) August 28, 2008, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll.
The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lectors will be Rachel Eischeid, Jennifer Determan, and Stephanie Black. Gift Bearers will be Patrick Volkir, Angela Hagen, Scott Determan, and Krystle Determan. Eucharistic Ministers will be Michael and Stephanie Determan and Gary Schramm.
The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will form an honor guard at the funeral home and at the church for the funeral mass.
Casket Bearers will be Mr. Determan’s six sons, Donald, Robert, David, James, Michael, and Thomas Determan. Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Early.
Joseph Determan died Sunday, August 24 at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.
Joseph Determan
Mr. Determan was born on May 22, 1918, at Mission, Texas, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Hazelhoff) Determan. His family moved to Early when he was young and he graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1934. On June 2, 1942, he was married to Delores Schramm at Sacred Heart Church in Early. Mr. Determan farmed in the Early area and in 1964 the family moved to Carroll where he worked as a Superintendent of various golf courses including the Carroll Municipal Golf Course, Carroll Country Club, Fontenelle Hills Country Club in Bellevue, NE, and then moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, to assist in building several golf courses. The family moved back to Carroll where Mr. Determan helped develop the back nine at the Carroll Municipal Golf Course. He retired in 1986 and for twenty years the couple traveled to Arizona for the winters. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, and the United Commercial Travelers. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. Mr. Determan treasured his children and grandchildren and loved to play golf and play cards.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Determan of Carroll; children, JoAnn Jensen and her husband Ron of North Beach, Maryland, Donald Determan and his wife Mary of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Jean Blum and her husband Jerry of Carroll, Barbara Seier and her husband Bill of Naperville, Illinois, Patricia Adams and her husband H.J. of Winter Haven, Florida, Mary Hagen and her husband Ron of Rice Lake, WI, David Determan and his wife Jeanne of Akron, Diane Klocke and her husband Duane of Coon Rapids, Michael Determan and his wife Stephanie, of Phoenix, AZ, Robert Determan of Omaha, NE., James Determan and his wife Marjorie of Lincoln, Nebr., and Thomas Determan and his wife Janna of Lakeland, Florida; 34 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; a sister, Marie Heid of Storm Lake; and brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Ramona Schramm of Early.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, John Determan; his parents; a sister, Helen Holub and her husband Ted; brother, Leo Determan; and brother-in-law, Andrew Heid.

Edith Johnson
August 14, 2008 · Funeral service for Edith Johnson was Saturday, August 9 at the Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids with Pastor Stephanie Simmons officiating.
Casket Bearers were John Grettenberg, Russell Heck, Jack Tuel, Pete Petersen, Keith Hjelle and Dean Jackson.
Honorary Casket Bearers were the O.M.C. Club Helen Honold, Arlene Pevestorf, Julia Thomas Rees, Neva Clark and Beth Lee.
Interment was in the Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids.
Edith Irene Johnson
Edith Irene, daughter of Chris and Sena (Moeller) Lund, was born August 10, 1918 at home on a farm near Botna. The family also lived on a farm near Manning and then in Aspinwall. Edith attended country schools and the school in Aspinwall. When she was in sixth grade the family settled in Coon Rapids where she graduated in 1937. While in high school she completed Normal Training and then taught country schools for six years. Over the years, Edith attended both Drake University in Des Moines and Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, eventually teaching in Bayard during World War II.
On September 16, 1945, Edith was united in marriage with Harold Johnson. They made their home in Coon Rapids where she began teaching in 1947. After six years, she retired from teaching to spend time caring for her family. During the 1955-56 school year, Edith started as Coon Rapids School Board and superintendent’s secretary under Superintendent Zea. She served in that capacity for 24 years, retiring in 1980. That same year, Edith and Harold were chosen Citizens of the Year by the Coon Rapids Kiwanis Club.
Edith was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church and Past President of Carroll County Teacher’s Association, Carroll County 4-H, and Iowa Chapter CU of the National TTT Society. She was a member of Federated Woman’s Club, American Home Department; O. M. C. Club; Retired Teachers Association and American Legion Auxiliary. Edith enjoyed her home and family and especially enjoyed the company of her sister Erna.
After Harold suffered a stroke and died in 1995, Edith continued with their plans to move to an apartment in Coon Rapids. When her health no longer permitted her to live alone she became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing in Coon Rapids. She died there on Thursday morning, August 7 at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 28 days.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Elmer Lund. Edith is survived by her daughter Kristie and husband Brian Cummings of Columbus Junction; son Kent Johnson and wife Sue of Wapello; four granddaughters: Alissa and husband Nathan Villhauer and their daughter Shelby of Hills; Sena Cummings of Columbus Junction; Andrea and husband Eric Riley of Davenport and Karra Johnson of Davenport; sister Erna Lund of Coon Rapids; sister-law Anna Lund of Glidden; other relatives and many friends.

Carl died Thursday, August 7 at Regency Park Nursing Home in Carroll.
The Celebrant was Father Timothy Schott. Lector was granddaughters, Amy Jones and Angie Macke. Gift Bearers were daughters, Sue Seeden, Jolene Andersen, and Deb Schultes, and god daughter, Tracy Hinners. Mass Servers were granddaughter, Nicol Schultes, and Nolan Schultes. Eucharistic Ministers were Kevin Schultes, Melissa Schultes, and Gary Sporrer.
Casket Bearers were grandsons, Tony Schultes, Ben Schultes, Nick Schultes, Nathan Seeden, Andrew Peacock, and Jacob Schultes.
Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Carl Schultes
Mr. Schultes was born on April 30, 1920, at Dedham, the son of John J. and Catherine (Weitl) Schultes. He spent most of his lifetime in the Dedham community and attended St. Joseph School.
On April 24, 1945, he was married to Regina Renze at Holy Angels Church in Roselle with Father Louis Anthofer officiating. The couple farmed northwest of Dedham until 1992 when they moved to their home in Carroll. Mr. Schultes was a grain and livestock farmer. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and enjoyed his family, visiting with his friends, farming, playing cards, and St. Louis Cardinal baseball.
Survivors include his wife, Regina Schultes of Carroll; children, Sue Seeden and her husband Harold of Glidden; Duane Schultes and his wife Barbara of Carroll; Jolene Andersen and her husband Mike of Scottsdale, AZ.; Dennis Schultes and his wife Barb of Dedham; Randy Schultes and his wife Jane of Carroll; Richard Schultes and his wife Denise of Dedham; Ronald Schultes of Dedham; Deb Schultes of Des Moines; Kevin Schultes of Dedham; and Paul Schultes and his wife Christine of St. Louis, Missouri; 23 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Leo Renze of Carroll; and sister-in-law, Loretta Schultes of Templeton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Schultes, in infancy; grandchildren, Samantha Jo Schultes and Carter Jay Schultes; brothers, John I. Schultes and William F. Schultes and his wife Rose; and a sister, Zita Renze.

Ronald Wurzer
August 14, 2008 · Mass of the Christian Burial for Ronald Wurzer, 69 of Willey was celebrated at Monday, August 4 at St. Mary Church in Willey.
Ronald died Thursday, July 31 at his residence following a long illness.

Ronald Wurzer
Mr. Wurzer was born on July 9, 1939, at Carroll, the son of Lawrence and Agnes (Grossman) Wurzer. He attended St. Mary School at Willey, Carroll High School, and graduated from Kuemper High School in 1957. On January 30, 1960, he was married to Mildred Tigges at St. Mary Church in Willey. The couple farmed southwest of Coon Rapids and in 1972 he started Ron’s Machine and Welding Shop on the farm. In the early 1990’s he began working for Carroll Manufacturing Company in Carroll as a machinist.
The Wurzers moved to their home in Willey in 1996 and from 1995 until November 2007 he worked with his son, Dave, at Terad Fabricating Inc. in Willey.
He was a member of St. Mary Parish and the Iowa Blacksmith and Welders Association. Mr. Wurzer enjoyed welding, playing euchre with his Dedham friends, pretty country music, working with his roses, Chicago Cubs baseball, and spending time with his grandchildren.

August 07, 2008 · A private family service for Gertrude Ford of Coon Rapids will be held at a later date.
According to Gertrude’s wishes her body has been donated for research to the University of Iowa. Gertrude requested that any memorials be given in her name to The Friends of the Library, 123 3rd Ave, Coon Rapids, IA 50058.

Headlee Ford
Gertrude Frances Headlee Ford, daughter of Charles and Loa (Charter) Headlee was born January 12, 1915, in Bear Grove in Guthrie County, and died July 29 at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids at the age of 93 years old. Gertrude grew up in Guthrie Center and graduated from Guthrie Center High School.
On June 24, 1932, Gertrude was united in marriage to Victor S. Ford in Guthrie Center. To this union seven children were born: Richard, Robert, Donna, Lynn, Victoria, Loa and Daniel.
Victor and Gertrude made their life together farming in Guthrie County and Carroll County in Carrollton. They were active members of the Star Methodist Church community. In 1960, the family moved to Coon Rapids. Gertrude began working as a secretary for the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids and later for the Garst Store as an accountant.
Gertrude was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids and volunteered her time teaching senior high Sunday school. She was very active with the Methodist Church Women, the H&H Club, the Rural Garden Club and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Gertrude was very interested in education and knowledge and volunteered her time later in life at the Deal Elementary School. The Coon Rapids Library held a special place in her life. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, cooking, reading, and genealogy. All of Gertrude’s grandchildren and family were very important to her and visited often.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Victor in 1995, grandson Kent Ford, brother Allen Headlee, sister Beth Mallon and nephew Gordon Headlee.
Gertrude is survived by her seven children: Richard (Stephanie) Ford of Corvallis, Oregon; Robert (Carol) Ford of Indianola; Donna (Richard) Schneider of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Lynn (Patti) Ford of Council Bluffs; Victoria Ford of Reno, Nevada; Loa (Burdette) Christensen of Huxley; and Dan (Sue) Ford of Audubon; 15 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren; brother Boyd Headlee of Minnesota; nephews Charles Headlee of Coon Rapids; John Headlee, Ken Headlee, Tom Headlee; nieces Beth Ann Otto, Delores Tomczik all of Minnesota and nephew Paul Headlee of Idaho; sister in-law Wilma Stormer of Coon Rapids; brother in-law Harold Ford of Spirit Lake; nephew Jay Ford of Denison and niece Carmen Maynard of Alabama and many other relatives and friends.

Stephen Wiederin
August 07, 2008 · Mass of the Christian Burial for Stephen Wiederin, 49 of Ralston will by at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (today) August 7 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with the Rev. Thiedeman as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemtery in Glidden.
Eucharistic Minister will be Ron “Woody” Beyer. Lector will be Gene Klocke and Gift Bearers will be Renee Stoffers, Chris Klocke, Kim Roberts, Wendi Behrens, Shannon Heisterkamp, Jennifer Reicks, Jessica Wiederin and Roxanne Richardson. Stephen died at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll on August 2 following a brief illness.
Stephen Joseph Wiederin
Stephen had been employed by Corner Stone Swine Production for the past 12 years. He has lived in Ralston for the past 22 years, prior to that he had lived in Lidderdale and Carroll. He was born on June 23, 1959 at Carroll and was the son of Merle and Thelma (Huegerich) Wiederin. He was married to Karlynn Heman on October 27, 1984 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Scranton with Rev. O. W. Koester as celebrant. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden. As a young boy he attended grade school at Holy Spirit and St. Lawrence and then attended and graduated from Carroll High School in 1977. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, camping, fishing, working in his garden, playing cards, mowing grass, watching the Hawks and the 49ers on TV.
Surviving are his wife, Karlynn of Ralston; a son, Chad of Ralston; his mother Thelma Wiederin of Carroll; his mother-in-law, Barbara Heman of Ralston and the following brothers and sisters: Louann Stoffers and her husband, Ron of Omaha, NE; Larry and his wife Sharon of Arcadia; Robert and his wife Mary of Carroll; Gary of Lidderdale; Kathy Olson and her fiancee Dick Greteman of Carroll; Lynn and his wife Mary of Ralston; Lois Beyer and her husband Ron “Woody” of Carroll; LaVerne of Carroll; LaVonne Richardson and her husband Rick of Carroll and Mike of Lidderdale; brother-in-law Jerome Kirsch of Carroll; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, a sister Shirley Kirsch and father-in-law Ron Heman.

Marian Long
July 31, 2008 · Funeral service for Marian Louise Long of Carroll was Saturday, July 26 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll.
Mrs. Long, 84, died Wednesday, July 23, at Regency Park Care Center in Carroll.
The Revs. David Anthony and Brian Licht officated the service. Casket bearers were Jim Honold, Jeff Shirbroun, Vernon Bane, Melvin Kruger, George Johnson and Adam Kanzmeier.
Burial was in Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery at Glidden.
Marian Louise Long
A daughter of William and Rose (Kruger) Kanzmeier, she was born June 24, 1924, at Ida Grove, was baptized that day by the Rev. John Iversen and was confirmed April 10, 1938, at Trinity Lutheran Church near Coon Rapids by the Rev. W.H. Frederick. She graduated from Coon Rapids High School May 21, 1942.
She and Alvin Long were married Aug. 18, 1943, at Marengo.
The Longs farmed in the Coon Rapids area for many years until retiring in 1978. They moved to Coon Rapids in 1985 and to Carroll in September 1990.
Mrs. Long was a longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a volunteer for RSVP, and she enjoyed antiques and fishing.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Champan, and her husband, Michael, of Omaha, NE.; and a granddaughter, Stacey Lorenzi, of Omaha; a brother Bill Kanzmeier and wife Vivian of Coon Rapids; sisters LaVonn Bane and husband Virgil of Scranton and Louise Sterwalt of Chariton; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and an infant brother.

Arlene Rogers

Arlene Rogers
Arlene Rogers, daughter of Clyde and Mabel (Boetker) was born July 22, 1918 in Dedham. She received her education in Dedham.. Arlene spent her entire life in the Dedham Community.
Arlene was a charter member of the Dedham American Legion Auxiliary.
Arlene moved to Regency Park Nursing Home in 2005.
Arlene is survived by cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Mabel Rogers and three brothers, Walter, Clarence and Clayton.

Roland Olson
July 31, 2008 · Funeral Service for Roland Olson of Exira was Tuesday, July 22 at the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids with Pastor Ben Ramirez officiating.
Casket Bearers were Jared Olson, Bryan Olson, Mike Carter, Melora Torp, Laura Lickfelt and Cathy Wilson.
Honorary Casket Bearers were Sam Cretsinger, Harvey Andersen, Arnold Andersen, Ed Kinnick, Henry Pedersen and Charles Headlee.
Interment was in the Orange Township Cemetery south of Coon Rapids.
Roland Chester Olson
Roland Chester, son of Peter William and Lela (Christensen) Olson, was born January 13, 1916, on a farm in Audubon County. Roland attended school rural school near his home and after completing his education worked with his father on the farm and, for a short time, worked as a painter.
On February 14, 1939, Roland was united in marriage with Dolores Cretsinger at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Exira where Roland worked as a carpenter for Godwin’s. Two sons were born to this union.
In 1942, after Roger was born, they moved to Omaha, NE, where Roland worked at the Martin B-26 bomber plant until the end of the war. In 1945 Dwight was born and Roland worked as a street car driver in Omaha. In 1945 they bought a farm in Guthrie County near Coon Rapids. At that time the family became active members of the Mt. Zion EUB Church near Viola. When that church closed, Roland and Dolores became members of the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids where Roland later served as a deacon. After the death of his wife Dolores in 1971, Roland continued to farm until he retired in 1979. Then he stayed on the farm and took up woodworking, a lifelong interest.
On June 27, 1984, Roland was united in marriage with Mary Eileen Kinnick Smith whose husband had died in 1977. Roland and Eileen made their home on his farm south of Coon Rapids until they moved to their home in Coon Rapids. Eileen died in 1999. Roland continued to live at home until his health began to fail at which time he moved to Swan House in Carroll. In 2006, Roland relocated to Exira Care Center, Exira, where he died on Thursday evening, July 17 at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 4 days.
Preceding Roland in death are his parents; two wives; brother William Roscoe Olson and sister Marie Jones.
He is survived by his two sons Roger Olson and wife Judy of Gray and Dwight Olson and wife Donita of Reading, MI; five grandchildren: Jared Olson and wife Melissa; Bryan Olson and wife Donna; Melora Torp; Laura and husband Christopher Lickfelt and Cathy and husband Robert Wilson; 12 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Orvil Bylund
July 31, 2008 · Memorial service for Orvil Bylund was Saturday, July 26 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Reverend Lynn Gunderson officiating.
Honorary Bearers were Steve Lowe, Stanley Lowe, Brian Lowe, Shelley Pollreis, Beth Ann Randall, D.J. Bylund, Ashley Bylund, Tyler Bylund, Danielle Kohl and Cody Faris.
Military Honors were given by American Legion Gurney Parker Post #357.
Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery northwest of Coon Rapids.
Orvil Wayne Bylund
Orvil Wayne, son of Earl and Flossie (Harvey) Bylund, was born March 20, 1923, in Coon Rapids. He attended Viola Township School. Following his schooling, he enlisted in the United States Navy on September 22, 1941. Orvil served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters on LST and merchant-class ships. He attained the rank of Petty Officer First Class and was honorably discharged on July 15, 1946.
Orvil was united in marriage with Ione Ida Goodwin on November 9, 1942, at Maryville, MO. Seven children were born to this union. Orvil’s occupation was a carpenter and he worked on several large buildings in the Des Moines area. He also worked as a farmer and painter during his career. He retired in 1985 and then he and Ione returned to Coon Rapids in 1996. Ione died in February of 2003.
Orvil was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Charity Masonic Lodge #197, Disabled American Veterans and Carpenter’s Union Local #106 of Des Moines. He thoroughly enjoyed woodworking and above all took pleasure in his children and grandchildren.
Orvil suffered a number of health problems over the past years. He was, however, determined to care for himself and be independent. He was admitted to St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll a short time before his death there on Thursday, June 26 at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 6 days.
Preceding Orvil in death are his parents; wife Ione Bylund; two brothers Raymond and Edward Bylund; and one sister, Ida Meek.
He is survived by his children: Gloria Del Duca of Florence, CO; Sandra and husband Mores Bergman of Bennington, NE; Douglas Bylund and wife Peggy of Lafayette, IN; Thomas Bylund and wife Beth of Eldridge; Denise and husband Brian Peterson of Sheldahl; John Bylund, Jr and wife Rikki of Goleta, CA and Tamara and husband John Faris of Florence, CO ; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sister Edna Bell of Red Oak; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
